Yep, I'm still a beginner. But I'm now retired, so "maybe" I'll have more time to learn. My lap steel is tuned to C6 and I have DeWitt Scott's "Basic C6th Nonpedal Lap Steel Method" book.
Should I continue with this, or start with another tuning?

regards and thanks...Larry W. Jones

To answer YOUR QUESTION:

JERRY BYRD used this tuning since 1939. He got a lot of fantastic mileage out of it. Before the days of EMMONS and GREEN, he was one of the most in demand steel guitar session players there was.

He played on more labels and with more artists from every type of country, gospel, pop and Hawaiian... than any other steel player in the neighborhood. I'm talking BIG NAMES! Red Foley, Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, Cowboy Copas, and on and on.

He played C6th on a 6 string Rickenbacher. Ultimately he raised the 6th string to C# and a new tuning was born C6th/A7th or whatever the techies choose to call it these days.

When he went to his 7 string Rickenbacher, he left the 6th string at C# and merely added the 7th string and tuning it to C. He often changed the bottom string to a variety of different pitches......and in some cases, played it as a BASS.

For a fabulously RICH melody tuning that provides many musical opportunities for sensational back-up,
I don't see HOW YOU COULD POSSIBLY go wrong with it.

Thank you Ray. I knew that Jerry Byrd invented C6th but didn't know those details you mentioned. I'm going to stick with this. Thanks for the encouragement.

Thanks George. I've got to go over and visit Herb at his store on 2102 Jean St, Houston. I need the inspiration.
