Oh! I have been studying Kung Fu in town for about a year. I am quite a beginner at it still working on correcting the problems in my body that 20 years of mostly sitting created. But very pleased with how quickly progress is made.

My guitar playing has improved at a much higher rate since I started studying martial arts, and I -know- that it is largely a result of the concentration, discipline, attention to detail, that the study has strengthened in me. Yay.

I think martial arts and music can always be related topics

I hold a san dan (3rd degree black belt) in Judo and a second degree black belt in Shodokan Karate.

I used to have a very severe stuttering problem so that was the reason I entered the martial arts when I was 18. Strangely, once I learned how to take care of myself, there were very few fights needed. (That was a bummer.)

I studied Shotokan in college with Sensei T. Okazaki, who had studied with Funakoshi(sp)the founder, and Sensei Kizaka, who was a very "stern" abusive instructor.
At the same time I was taking Kendo as a phys.ed class with Koji Shimada.
Later, some classes with Steve Johnson a student of Bruce Lee, a weeks Aikido seminar with Sensei Tohei who studied with the founder Ueshiba.
Then I settled on a Tae Kwon Do style that included early MMA kick boxing and Crane style gung fu.
I worked hard at it in my mid 20's achieved a 2nd degree. At about age 30 my body told me it needed less contact and I studied Tai Chi for a while.
I still stretch, do what forms I remember sometimes, and hit the bag on occaision, but mostly I am content to just play my steel.
I don't miss it at all.

American/Chinese style Kenpo Karate for me. Add to that 20+ years of different classes on handling aggressive/violent folks. I prefer peace and non-violence. If that's not an option, then we'll make it quick!

Gary,

I suggest that to everyone who complained about this thread, the next time you see them, you karate chop their guitar in half. If they don't stop them, start on body parts. Laughing

I didn't take any, Gary. But, my daughter,on the other hand took Ishin Ru. And she earned a yellow belt in it. She was 8 years old when she took it.
