I'll slightly "stretch" the boundaries of what the natives of that area use, so let's call it, Southern Mi. and Northern In. As far as a region that has produced some of the greatest Steel Players ever, this area has few rivals. Here's a partial list to start off with. Jerry Byrd, Buddy Emmons, Sneaky Pete, Joe Wright...........there are more...add yours. ADDENDUM: I'll define the region as, the lower half of Michigans lower peninsula, south, to Indianappolis.

Right on, Keep'm comin! The Paul Franklin addition of course is definitive. I knew it wouldn't take long for that name, Paul is absolutely one of the preeminent players for sure!!! |

I grew up in South Bend IN and spent 40 years there before moving to the Indianapolis area where I attempt to play now. I first learned pedal steel in the "Michiana" area. However, I in no way put myself anywhere near the level of the greats who hail from there. No way at all.
Nevertheless, pedal steel guitar was prevalent in that area. There were many, many places to play from there all the way over to the East Chicago-Gary-Hobart part of the state. I think it's important to mention that there was a steeler by the name of Elmer Hobar who was simply outstanding, too. He was a friend of Buddy Emmons and, goodness, could he play.
Black push-pulls were all around as were Sho-Buds. It was a fun time. |

Terry fits the geographic profile being from Flint. BTW, I think Terry will soon be in that HOF group. |

I had never even thought of playing steel until I moved to Kalamazoo. Is there something in the water?
I was surrounded by fine players there including fobros Larry Bell and Tom Stolaski. Good, good times. |

I'm from Sault Ste. Marie which is as north as you can go and still be in Michigan. Compared to the other steelers mentioned here, I would describe myself as more of a bystander than a player ...

I just played a club called "The Midway Tavern" in Mishawaka outside of South Bend. Its an old music room and was just dripping with vibe.
Any of you steel players from around there know the room ? _________________ Bob |

The late Warren Pearson was from Cleveland Ohio, but played many years from Rochester, Indiana. He could play the daylights out of his Sho~Bud ProIII. Really a great player. Ray Krick hails from Muncie, Indiana and played on early TV stuff lives in Rochester. He has built all of his own steels snce the 50's, and was part of the Pierce Steel deal, though I'm not sure how. Ray has a strange tuning, but plays ANY style of country just as well. _________________ RICK ABBOTT
