I plan on going to country tonite. They had some good steel guitar last time I went. I absolutely love the harmonica player there that's been there since they opened in the 90's. On the flip side, I was shocked to see how young the actors/dancers were. Some looked to be as young as 14 years old.
Are there any other shows worth going to? Does anyone know if Herby Wallace still has his business in Sevierville or does he run it out of his home. |

Dear Ben,
I operate my business out of my home, but I still carry the same mdse, so if there is anything you need, please give me a call. I moved out of my other location of 15 years when my lease ran out and rent would have doubled to stay there.
As far as shows in the area with steel guitar, don't get me started as the scene around here is terrible. I can't buy a job as they say, because I don't play several instruments. Larry Stewart at Country Tonite does a good job, but he has to play other instruments too. Jack Molette who plays lead guitar is one of the best around, so he is worth hearing. As far as steel, the Smith Brothers has a guy named Dale Thompson, but I won't comment about him. Stoney Stonecipher plays at Dollywood, but their season may be over by now. As far as I know, that is it in this area as all the other shows don't think that steel guitar is necessary in so called Country Music. I don't mean to have a bad attitude, but that is the way it is. I have played a regular show in this are for over 7 years. In other words, if I played average on several instruments I might could get a job.

Thanks Herby. I am back home now and just getting to my computer. I didn't get to check my mail just before I left or while I was there. Anyrate, I didn't get chance to get around that much as I was only there a day. I did stop by Ernest Tubb's and also went to see country tonite. I enjoyed the show but I can't get over how they put 10 year olds up there singing. One song or two would be OK and would have been cute, but they sang half the show. I guess the economy is that bad. I hope this doesn't offend anyone. It's just my opinion. On the other hand, as a whole, I still enjoyed the show.
Larry did a great job on the steel although they don't put him in the mix quite as much as I would like it. Still sounded good though. He played a considerable amount of C6th which surprised me. I enjoyed it.
Herby, as good as a player as you are, it surprises me a steeler of your caliber doesn't have people asking you to play for them. I've met you a couple times in person and you're a swell guy and I like your style. If you were to play at any given show, then I would definatley attend. Maybe economy will pick up a little next year. |

Herby is certainly right. The Steel Guitar has been shrinking in the shows here abouts. There are a number of steel guitar players that are out of work besides Herby, namely, Junior Mercer is one of them. The versatility certainly plays a part also. In my show (The Kinfolks Show at Dollywood) I not only play steel, but also Dobro and some mandolin. I'm with Herby, I hope they get some good ole country producers at some of the shows around town. If you are ever at Dollywood in the summer time I would be delighted to meet you. |

Would like to meet you and hear you play as well. I agree with you. I wish that steel guitars were more in demand. And this multitasking I know gets old. Most people don't realize what a pain it is to load, haul, amd setup a steel guitar. Let alone additional instruments.
It's been a few years since I went to Dollywood. Always a lot of fun. I've been going there since I was a kid when it was Silver Dollar City. My folks remember going when it Gold Rush Junction. If it wasn't for Dolly Pardon endorsing the park, I'm not sure if the area would be half as commercialized as it is now. Ever since 1985, things have grown big time. Especially during the mid to late 90's. |

Do you think they even care? Why would the? There's always some young kid that's willing to take the job, and they don't mind wagging all the gear around. I know because I used to be one of them.
Make sure you go by and see Stoney's show. It's one of the few country shows that's left. Stoney is the steel guitar icon for this area. Music has come and gone, but I don't ever remember Stoney not having plenty of gigs. That says a lot. |
