I was interested in whether anyone had replaced their 12" speakers in a Fender Twin with the lighter Neodynium magnet speakers? I spoke to a rep. at Emminence who recommended the "Tonkerlite" as a possibility.....
I found a lot of comments on the 15" Kapalites.....a very mixed response too...couldnt find anything on the 12"......
Anybody? |

I would definitely recommend a look at Weber Speakers as an alternate solution to what you are trying to accomplish. I have bought 3 speakers from them so far and i wouldn't have anything else!! Good Luck! _________________ "Steel players are like fine wine, we get better with age" |

I have a 12" "redcoat" tonkerlite that I'm using in a separate speaker cabinet about the same size as the Nashville 112 cabinet. I've been using a Crate Power Block as the amplifier and it sounds good with both my Tele and a Les Paul.
It's an 8 ohm model as the Power Block suggests using an 8 ohm load when in the "bridged" power amp mode. |

I installed a Weber NeoMag 15 (aluminum dome) in my Twin. It has a very nice JBL like tone but with a more complex midrange. I found it to have a bit more "texture" than the super clean JBL - perfect for both steel and Tele. Unfortunately it is rated at 75 watts and I ran into some distortion issues at higher volume. I had to go back to using my D-130F.
Since the NeoMag 12 is also rated at 75 watts, a pair of them should handle the output from a Twin just fine. If they sound like the NeoMag 15, they should be an excellent match for a Twin.
Note: If you prefer the vintage alnico Jensen sound, I hear that Weber will soon be offering their vintage speaker line with neo magnets, at a lower price point than the alnico versions. |

I have a 'Lil Texas in my '65 Twin RI and it sounds fine in that amp. I've been thinking of replacing the other Jensen in it with a Tonkerlite, but I'm a little concerned that the Tonkerlite may breakup before I want it too. I don't like speakers to breakup before the amp does. If they made a neo version of the Wizard I'd go with that in a second flat! _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |

Roger,
I have no experience with the Weber 12s but have a pair of neo 15s in a 60s sized Showman cab. These are the best sounding 15s I have used.
Just my opinion but I have never been satified with Emminence speakers.
I really like the Jensen C12N and their neo built by Sica in Italy sounds good too. The Webers are still #1 for me with Steel, Lap or 6 string. |

If you are trying to cut down the weight, then I don't think the Weber neo's are the answer, as the neo 12's are 8 lbs each. Lighter than a JBL D120F, but not any lighter than the stock Fender Twin speakers...Jerry |

Jerry - yes, see your point about the weight. Looked them up on their website and, as you say theyre 8.5 lbs.
The Jensen and Emminence 12s are in the 4.5 lb range....
Thanks Rich and Jerry for the comments. |

I had a pair of the Jensen Neo 12's in a Twin and was pretty happy with the sound.
They were a huge improvement over the stock speakers and I could lift the amp.
Still heavy-but much improved in the weight depatment. |
