Does anyone have experience using printable decal paper?
I need a large decal (11 x 17) printed. I would prefer to have this done on a color laser printer as I would not then have to seal it before application.
I don't have a large format printer. I asked at the local 'Staples' and they said they would not put the decal paper into their machine. I asked if they were prepared to print onto normal paper and then make a color photo copy - they refused to do that also. Is there something bad about this process?
The decal is part of the design that I have in mind regarding a current lap steel build.

Allan,
Many print shops will have digital output capability and handle large format (11"x17") too. I'd check with them before I went with an office store like Staples, etc. The print shops will often be used to handling material other than office paper as well.
Decal paper has to be far safer to run through a laser printer than things like self-adhesive label stock ...

Basil, it's inches - sorry for the confusion. That's a fairly common size in the US so I wasn't thinking. It's the equivalent here of A3 in the rest of the world. Two times letter size which is 8 1/2" by 11".
Very good point regarding the label stock David. Now, where did I leave the Yellow Pages...

I used printable transfer paper to apply this maker's label to the back of the lap steel I built for Basil. (I usually put a maker's label inside the instrument, but you can't do that on one made of solid wood.)
I printed the label on an Epson Stylus Photo 820 dot matrix printer. The only difficulty I had was making sure that the colours didn't bleed, so I had to wait until the decal was dry then applied a spray-on fixative sparingly. It did bleed a little round the edges.
I applied it in March 2008. I'm hoping it hasn't peeled off yet.  |

Nice Alan, very nice. I think I have found someone locally to do the large decal that I need but if I ever need help with the wording - you da man!
