Hard to believe it's been two years already. I always enjoyed his music and he was a supporter of steel guitar throughout his career.

Ray, that'd be Fred Newell on steel with Porter on that video. He's best known as the lead guitarist on the old Nashville Now show on TNN. He was also the session guitarist on most of the Alabama hits and also played that classic intro and guitar work on the Kendall's "Heaven's Just a Sin Away"....JH in Va.

If you look at Fred Newell's GFI steel guitar, you will notice that one neck's got ten strings and one neck's got six strings.

Also, Fred's six string neck isn't played with a bar. It's tuned like a standard guitar and played overhand and fretted with the fingers, just like Thumbs Carlisle did. Blackie Taylor also has a guitar like that except his inside neck is a 12 stringer. Gene Fields who builds the guitars also has a 12 stringer but he's got an eight string neck on the outside which is tuned in a sixth tuning of some sort. He also frets it with his fingers overhand style.........JH in Va.
