| I'm soliciting suggestions for good rock music played using a 6 string lap steel. I have all of David Lindley's El Rayo-X albums and love them, but would like to be turned on to other such artists and music...thanks in advance for your advice. |

If i was wanting to research some rock chops on lap, I'd study the sacred steelers. That stuff would wail in a rock context. (robert randolph kinda makes that leap with it, even tho he's on a pedal steel) |

Sonny Rhodes is another bluesy lap steeler.
Really, anytime you hear someone playing slide guitar, that same thing can be played on a lap but with more sustain.
So, you can go from Duane Allman, to Keith Richards, to Lowell George and finally to Bonnie Raitt all in the course of an evening with a couple of laps set to Open E and Open G (D on the 6th string). |

Isn't there a newer young artist named Ben Harper that plays lap steel?
Older groups that come to mind are Glenn Ross Campell from the Misunderstood and Juicy Lucy, but he possibly played a D-8 console, and I think Dr. Hook had a lap steel player (Cover of the Rolling Stone). I'm sure there's more.

Don't forget Lindley's Jackson Browne sides, I just love how he rocks the major scale. Also some killer Lindley tracks with Warren Zevon and Elliot Morris.
Tom Gray's work with Delta Moon is great. Many thanks to Keith Cordell for turning me on to Last Town Chorus and especially Tony Bruno in Major Lingo. I'd also suggest steeling some slide ideas from 6 string masters Ry Cooder, Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth, and particularly Lee Roy Parnell. |

ditto Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals! - he plays lap in an open D variant I think, good stuff.
Check out Spencer Bohren - mostly blues, but hey - the blues had a baby and they called it rock and roll right?! http://www.spencerbohren.com/ Recommend the CD 'Southern Cross'.
Marc Friedland on this forum, usually in the pedal side has a new rock oriented album coming out with hits from the 60's and 70's including some Hendrix and others. Althought pedal steel, he plays a lot of the distorted rock licks as if he had a lap steel.
btw, I like basic open D vs. Open E for rock my self. It puts that open E chord on the second fret and makes it easy to do a simple rock hammer on rhythm.
