I've been listening to that cd a lot lately since I got the Fender bug and noticed that Mooney's tone changes gradually from start to finish. Track 1 sounds thin and trebly to me but by the end of the cd his sound is rich and full (especially noticeable on track 9 and 12). Did he change guitars during the session or just continually tweak the amp? I'm assuming he played the Fender since he's pictured with it on the cover.
Just curious. I don't care for tone on track 1 but love the later tracks on the cd.

You'd have to go to Moon himself for the definitive answer, but I've always been under the impression he used his neck selector switch for thinning and fattening his tone, paticularly when he does it quickly, as on "The Texas Waltz".

Hmmm.
I listened again on the way to work and turned it up to drown out the road noise. Probably the same guitar and maybe what I was hearing was on track 1 was that he was playing more the open high strings which gave it a scratchy sound (didn't he use a 10 for high G#?) and those tracks I like he was playing the lower strings and maybe pushing the amp more.......
Maybe my ears are tired. Seems like I need to turn this one up a bit to get the right effect.

Dave, speaking of Moon, yesterday at The Last Record Store (a great local music store for you non-Sonoma County residents) I scored a used CD of Waylon's "Honky Tonk Heroes," a version that was redone in 1999 from the original master tapes.
$7.99 and the disc is pristine.
For whatever reason, I have only had this recording on vinyl since it came out in the 1970's, and it might be my favorite country album of all time.
When I head off to work in a few minutes I will be enjoying this one in the car CD player. Some of the best Ralph Mooney of his career!

Hi Mark. I have that one on vinyl too! Found it at a flea market for a dollar years ago. Love it! Although my all time favorite Mooney with Waylon is Lonesome, Ornery and Mean....
And Mark, speaking of the Last Record Store, I'l be playing the annual Gram Parsons tribute at the Last Day Saloon with Doug Jayne, the owner of the Last Record Store. Hope you can make it. It will be on Nov 6th.

Yes, "Lonesome, Orn'ry & Mean" is my favorite solo from his Waylon days, although there are some real gems tucked away on other album cuts. There are players who are more technically proficient, but no one makes the hair on my neck stand up like Moon. I've posted this thought before, but I believe when we all get to heaven, God is going to put on the 45 of "Mental Cruelty", by Buck Owens and Rose Maddox,
and say, "Gentlemen, this is what I intended for a steel guitar to sound like!"

I know Ralph played E9 with no top chromatic string but does anyone know his pedal setup and knee levers for Corn Pickin'? Also how did he tune the lower strings. It's refreshing to here his simple a gutsy approach.
