As you can see, the look has been changed. The sound is also considerably better.

It encompasses so much more than what the preview would suggest and is more of a lesson in what to do with a transcription than just a lesson in how to play the song. The intermediate and advanced player would most likely get the biggest benefit from this. My heart and soul went into this one and I'm very proud of the lesson. It took a lot of planning to keep things concise and focused and I really believe that you will benefit greatly from this video if you're looking for a fresh infusion of new ideas.
Thanks to Todd Clinesmith for the wonderful guitar. Also, thanks to Mark Roeder for the use of your stand--it wouldn't be the same without it.

Thanks, Orville. I tried switching to a Youtube embedded video, maybe that's when you were trying to watch. My video is 6 minutes too long for Youtube. I may try to reduce it, just so folks can have the ability to skip ahead.

Mike,
I'm also getting white noise on my Mac G5, the video seems to be frozen at the beginning.....it's probably that JWPlayer you're using (finicky things  )
It's not Firefox, because the JWPlayer videos on SteelGuitarMojo are working just fine.
Sometimes you have to reload the video. Where are you serving it from, could that be the issue?

Mike, it plays fine for me on a Mac using Safari too though there's a little bit of hiss. Suggest you flip your overhead shot 180 degrees so that it matches the player's perspective looking down at the instrument. The "railroad track" perspective shot down the fingerboard is probably not necessary IMHO. Having looked at this issue extensively in my work, I feel that more than two camera angles actually distract from rather than enhance learning. This is how I handled it for the three John McGann DVD's I produced/directed:

The slow version seems just right for teaching speed and overall, it's fantastic that you're taking time to explore and document these styles in motion video, Mike. when you look at the price of a pro lesson, your videos will be a real bargin. |

Thanks, Andy. I experimented with the 180 degree flip to the player's perspective, but I just don't like that view personally. It looks more like a private lesson to me from the other perspective.
As far as the length of the neck, the reason I did it is because there's a lot of bar moves that I want to capture clearly. Just an overhead view will not do it properly and it will cause me to have to change my grip to make things more visible, which I don't want to do.
Another thing is, in the Melody and Solo sections, I cut out all face time. The face time is there in Part 3 only, where there are only 2 cameras on the guitar.
As far as distortion goes, I guess that's just a result of the squeezing to Flash--something which I'd never done before. I also have these files for Quicktime and WMP, but I decided to just embed the Flash. Still looking into shortening this for Youtube.

John, the package contains a full transcription followed by a lesson in using the licks to create your own ideas. Lots of harmonic discussion, stuff like that. Rhythm tracks, tab/notation. It would probably take me half a dozen private lessons to get all this across.
There will be more tunes/styles down the road, but they will be separate videos.

I see your point about the 180, Mike. That's what makes horse races and video lessons, I guess. It's very hard to suss out exactly where issues like noise happen in a complex signal chain like a video encode. With work for clients, I often find we have to re-encode several times or change codecs to find that sweet spot were video plays perfectly for the majority of users. There's always somebody's system that has problems. Having the DVD-R available should eliminate that issue.

We've used every method to encode--this was simply to embed Flash on my page rather than .mov or .mpeg. The results are less than stellar, but it doesn't represent the final product. Perhaps I'll compile a short preview in High Quality.

Even though it's a preview, I really want to rectify this sound issue, so I'm encoding it again. It's bugging the hell out of me. Have to leave for a gig now, but maybe by tomorrow it will be fixed.

| There's still some audible hiss on the QT file but it's totally acceptable and the video quality is great. What's more, the teaching is very clear and understandable especially when you're talking about the blocking and double-thumb techniques. I've seen a number of steel lesson videos that amazingly, barely mention blocking - probably THE most important aspect of getting a good sound on electric steel. I still vote for the player's perspective on the overhead shot because that player bird's-eye-view is one of the advantages of video over a live lesson. Bottom line: great job! |

Before I assemble the final videos, I will process the audio and make sure there's as little audible hiss as possible.

A remarkably complete and clear instructional video, Mike. I've never seen another one as good. Looking forward to the formal release, and to your follow-on videos.
I thought I'd like this new screen layout better, but now the perspective for the picking hand is reversed from the perspective for the bar hand, so for me it's a little harder to follow. But "you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself." |
