| I had the opportunity to finally hear most of the showpro album that Jeff Surrat put together. While I was impressed by everyone on the record I was knocked out by Russ Pahl's contribution. In my not so humble opinion he played some of the most creative sonic palettes that I've heard in a while. His distortion sound was beautiful and round, and his delay pads sat perfectly in the track. I understand why he is in such demand in Nashville. While he is totally capable of being a traditionalist, he's taken the instrument to another place. |

That's for sure Bruce. Russ acknowledges a Jeff Beck influence on that piece and it comes together beautifully. At 1:48 in he plays some phrases that cause me to keep hitting the button to replay that part when I listen to it.
The whole CD is great and I don't think I've missed a day listening to part or all of it since it arrived in my mail box. You'll have to get yourself a Show Pro and add your input when, or if Jeff puts together another CD. |

Some of my favorite examples of Russ "pushing the boundaries" are the way he uses delays on Patty Loveless' "On Your Way Home", and wah-wah on Allison Moorer's "Steal the Sun"... Very cool stuff...
Does anyone know of good examples of him playing prominent "low" stuff on his long scale "baritone" steel? |

| I had picked up a copy of this CD from Jeff Surrat in St Louis, Russ's contribution is my favorite cut on the CD. All the cuts are great & the originallity/mix of Russ's track makes it stand out for me. All the best. Jeff |

Russ should be executed for having such tone. (ha ha)
It's a great cut and it's also a great idea.
I took my very first lesson from Russ about 30 years ago. He was as great then as he is now. Always very creative. I'm proud to call him a friend.

You guys were right! Great CD! All the players sound excellent, as do the guitars. I have to agree I think Russ's contribution is my favorite. Even if I hadn't seen Bills post, I still would have thought that Russ has listened to a couple of Jeff Beck records. 
Nice job Russ, I really enjoy it!

Russ has been on the cutting edge for so long. I remember back in about '79 or '80 walking into Duffy's (formerly Mr. Nib's) in Minneapolis and hearing a B3 player onstage as I walked in. Looked up and, nope, it was Russ playing his Emmons through a Leslie. Blew me away as he was playing typical B3 lines on steel. Awesome.

Russ is just an outstanding musician. I had the pleasure of hanging with Russ when he played a TV show with Willie Nelson in Chicago in September. At the beginning of the day, I introduced myself by saying. "Hello Russ, my name is TC and I am the sound mixer for the show. I am going to say something that I bet you'll never hear again from a sound guy." He answered "What's that?" I said " I really enjoyed From Square One" The Show Pro Cd had been out about a week. He smiled and we were instant comrades.
Russ is a super nice guy and we got to talk at dinner for an hour or more. He mentioned his style as a sort of being neo-traditionalist. As I understand it, Russ is as much in demand as a session guitar player as a steel player. I really like the way Russ thinks musically and explores new territory.
Speaking of that YouTube of Vince with Russ playing at the Ryman. What about Dawn Sears' harmonies. MAN ALIVE it doesn't get any better than that!

If you have a HD Televison and get the HDNET channel, they run that concert about once a month. It is absolutely terrific between the band and Vince's very down to earth personality.
Dawn also gets plenty of camera shots and you are correct; the gal can sing.

Not sure if it was Russ who played the Lonestar Just The Rain track off the Life As We Know It album but whoever it was sure has a nice vibrato drag going.
