Pickup Recommendation

The tone I get from my 1972 Sho-Bud Maverick seems thin and shrill. Anyone have a recommendation on a pickup that would deliver a mellower tone with more middle and bass?

Richard, what amp are you using and what speaker? I'd dial that in before I'd go to the pickup.

James is on a good track. I'd fiddle with the amp a bit first, but if you're determined to try a new PU's I think the George-L 10-1 has a nice mellow, jazzy sound.

My stock Mullen pickup was a very warm and mellow single coil. I put an E66 in it and its much brighter and louder, now. I still have the original.
Mullen often pairs the E66 to E9 and the 10-1 to C6 I think.
Id agree with Stan on the 10-1, though not based on personal experience.

I have a Fender Deluxe (1996 reissue) with one 12". It's so loud, I keep the volume between 1 and 2. I usually practice through headphones and a Line 6 Pod, but in either case, I've got the treble turned down, the middle and bass turned up, but still get a very thin tone.

Richard, Did it just get that way, or has it been that way all the long?? Does it sound thin when you go direct into the amp? The POD might be suspect. What volume pedal are you using? If it's any of those things above, you can change pickups all you want--won't do much good.

Take an ohm meter and test your pickup and see what it reads. If the pickup is wacky, Jerry Wallace can rewind it so you keep that 'bud tone and keep your original look. Just a thought.

Thanks, James. I stopped playing for several years and just started again, but it seems I always have been fighting this. In the Pod as well as the amp, I have the treble turned down to 2, middle and bass at 7, but not getting much body to the sound. I'm using the big aluminum Sho-Bud floor volume pedal and just had a new pot put in it.

What sort of reading should I be getting with the ohm meter?

Still, plug direct into your amp and see if it makes a diff. Ideal range on your pickup should be around 17,500--give or take a little. Another thing, put your pickup 2-3 quarters width below your strings. Also, If you want a more mellow tone, go with nickel strings vs. stainless. These are just some rocks I turn over before I opt for surgery. The "make for sure" deal. Smile

Take James' advice! I happen to prefer the sound and "growl" to any of the newer pickups. But, that's just me. I'm a ShoBud nut! You can have your original pup rewound if it's fallen out of spec, and for less than a new pup costs.

Hey I just noticed that it's you selling that Pro I've been salivating over for the last few days. That is the epitome of steel guitars. If it hangs on very much longer, I just don't know what I'll do. Must be a heartbreaker to have to let that go. What a beauty.

that's a trebly steel first, and fender amps are way too trebly for me. even with a peavey solid state 15 inch 400 i turn the treble way down.
