Ive been using crunchbang linux

http://crunchbanglinux.org/start/

its pretty cool, way way faster with no bloat. No gnome or kde, just openbox, which is a very customizable window manager. Its built on top an ubuntu minimum install, so all the commands and programs translate (same repos).

I used ubuntu since dapper, so its nice to get back to simplicity.

It comes with all the drivers and pluggins. (British distro so different laws apply) After my install I did an initial update, rebooted, it detected my nvidea card and gave me driver options. Sound, and flash worked out of the box. Set up network printing and ssh in about 4 minutes. very cool distro.

with this distro you need to know the command line more than regular ubuntu, but it is worth trying the live cd. You may need to do a fresh install of ubuntu and see if that helps.

when I first started using linux you had to hunt down drivers for sound and video card and hack them to get them to work. Its got a lot better but as you can see sometimes doesnt want to work right.

lets keep working on your sound issue in ubuntu, as it may be easier to learn some basic command line stuff.

at a terminal type in

Code:
lspci -v
and post the output.

also type in

Code:
aplay -l
(that is - lowercase L not 1) and post the output.

lspci is a quick hardware inventory, and aplay -l list sound cards.

I am betting that your on-board built in sound card is interfering with your sound blaster, and its probably just an issue of selecting the right card.

your should see something like this:
Code:
desktop:~$ aplay -l

Make sure to do whats in the last post, but also when you Right click the sound icon on your panel and select “Open Volume Control" open the drop down menu and see if your card is present, in your screen shot its set to an intel card, which is most likely your old motherboard one. open that and hopefully there will be a sound blaster option. If there are 2 just try the other one even if you dont recognize the name.

the good news, linux sees the correct sound card. Now its just a process of elimination, and by murphy's law if there are 10 possible solutions it will be the tenth that is the fix, so be patient, once we fix this that will be the end of your sound problems, and you will have your computer configured properly for your sound card.

this is my aplay -l below, and as you can see we have similar results.

Code:
c$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 0: ca0106 [CA0106]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 1: ca0106 [CA0106]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 2: ca0106 [CA0106]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 3: ca0106 [CA0106]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

It sees your card, you just need to disable your built in card intel card that shows up on the bottom of your aplay. Also Make sure your speakers are plugged into the sound blaster and not into the motherboard (intel) card.
did you go back to ubuntu and try what I posted in my last post? From your picture of when you right clicked on the sound Icon, the intel device was chosen, when it should have been a creative device. So we need to knock that out first. You probably need to just tick the correct box.

things to do in this order, and please post the results of all three.

1. Make sure the speakers are plugged into the correct sound card, not the original motherboard one.

2.try right clicking the sound icon and like in the picture I posted in my last post.

3. if those dont work, in a terminal type

Code:
killall pulseaudio

and try that.

Please post the results of all three attempts.

just putting this here so I can find it later:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1052754&page=4

when you get a message telling you to be super, or root, you need to type in sudo before the command, followed by your password. Sudo gives you admin powers. If you type a command and are told that you need to be sudo, type this next

Code:
sudo !!

hit enter and it will ask you for a password

that tells the shell to redo the last command with sudo in front of it (!! means repeat your last command).

are you dual booting with ubuntu or did you install crunchbang over ubuntu?

if your using vlc:

1 open vlc
2 hit ctl d,
3 chose DVD or audio cd
4 chose either /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1. You may have to type it in to the dialog box if you dont see 2 options.

A quick way to see what your cd/dvd drives are called is to type in at a terminal
Code:
eject /dev/sr0
and note which drive opens. The other will be /dev/sr1/

Also note that there is an audio menu in vlc, which has an audio device selector in it.

awesome! Very Happy

for dvds you need to download a library that cant be shipped with linux for legal reasons.

Code:
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

then do
Code:
sudo updatedb

if your top player is also your dvdplayer this is the command :

Code:
vlc dvd:///dev/sr0

if your dvd player is another try sr1 instead of sr0

some times things fix themselves in linux. vlc is finicky. If your interested I made some shell scripts to play cds and dvds with the commands "playcd" and "playdvd" so you dont have to remember the longer vlc commands. If you cant get a dvd to play and you get this:

Code:

**  /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/README.Debian  **
**  for more information.                     **
**                                            **

libdvdnav: DVD Title: SBSP_FRIEND_OR_FOE
libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number: 36458E18
libdvdnav: DVD Title (Alternative): SBSP_FRIEND_OR_FOE
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/inoculos/.dvdnav/SBSP_FRIEND_OR_FOE.map'

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1914 ***
*** for (uint32_t)pgci_ut->nr_of_lus * PGCI_LU_SIZE <pgci_ut>last_byte ***

libdvdnav: ifoRead_PGCI_UT failed
*** Zero check failed in ifo_read.c:1786
    for pgcit->zero_1 = 0xf3b7

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1790 ***
*** for pgcit->nr_of_pgci_srp <10000>zero_1 = 0x7472

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:842 ***
*** for pgc->nr_of_programs <pgc>nr_of_cells ***

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:860 ***
*** for pgc->program_map_offset != 0 ***

libdvdnav: ifoRead_PGCIT failed
libdvdnav: Suspected RCE Region Protection!!!

then you will have to do what is in my last post.

My Pleasure, I love hacking at this stuff

to do my scripts:

at a terminal

FOR CD

Code:
sudo gedit ~/bin/playcd

copy this into the open file and save

Code:

#!/bin/bash
echo "put the disk in the tray, it will close in 7 seconds so sit down and relax"
eject && sleep 7 && eject -t
sleep 7 && vlc cdda:///dev/sr0

save that and close it

then do
Code:

cd bin
sudo chmod 755 playcd

FOR DVD:

Code:
sudo gedit ~/bin/playdvd

Code:
#! /bin/bash
echo "put the disk in the tray, it will close in 7 seconds"
eject && sleep 7 && eject -t
sleep 8 && vlc dvd:///dev/sr0

save and close that

then

Code:

cd bin
sudo chmod 755 playdvd

now to play a cd just type
Code:
playcd
, the tray will open, put your cd in, the tray will close and vlc will start.

in the scripts you can adjust the numbers after sleep to be faster or slower,
Code:
sleep 7 &&
means wait 7 seconds before executing the next command.

Code:
playdvd
plays the dvd

David, to install BIAB you will need to install Wine first. There are many ways to get Wine on Ubuntu, but this is the recommended way:

http://www.winehq.org/download/deb

Just follow the instructions under "Adding the WineHQ APT Repository" and "Trusting the WineHQ APT Repository and installing Wine."

You also might want winetricks, if the BIAB installer complains about one or more packages not being present: http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

All of the directions are on that site...it might look intimidating but there's not much to it. You add the Wine repository, then install Wine with your package manager. Then you use Wine to run the BIAB setup program. Then once it's installed you use Wine to run BIAB.

Hey David you need to run

Code:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

to complete the install on crunch bang as it doesnt do auto updates for you or tell you when there is an update like ubuntu does

about once a week run these:
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Code:
sudo apt-get autoclean

Code:
 sudo apt-get clean

just using super u will not update everything like it should
