I'm planing to go see the Marshal Tucker Band. I was wondering if they have a steel player on the road. If they do, who is it? Thanks, CGG

That'd be cool, but I highly doubt there will be a steeler. Havn't heard of anyone in the band dbling on steel.
Hope they do the legacy proud. Have fun! And tell us how it went.

I am a Marshall Tucker fan, I went to see them last year, no steel player the vocals was not good. The only thing that was resonable was the flute player. They spent most of there time playing songs i never heard. I sure hope you have better luck.

There's a guy in Marshall Tucker Band who is a guitarist, but he plays pedal steel too, his name is Stuart Swanlund.

Sad to hear that. Maybe it's time to hang the hat.
Can't even find a mention of who's in the band any more on their sites.

Singer Doug Grey lost his wife in June.

I opened for Marshall Tucker a few weeks ago. Alas, no steel. Doug chided me - "why didn't you bring your steel, son? I'd have gotten you up to play!" I was flattered, but I'm not THAT good.

Their crew did a quick line check, then cleared the stage and told us to go ahead and use their drums and bass rig if we wanted to (unheard of!)..they moved the keyboard rig for our keyboard player (rare), and told me and the other guitar player to feel free to move anything around to make ourselves comfortable (even more rare). Great guys! We got a 45 minute soundcheck! Both the guitar players were great, and the keyboard/sax/flute guy was hot stuff. We've done shows together in the past when I was touring with Gregg. They have always been a great bunch of guys.

Enjoy the show! They are not what they were 20 years ago, but IMHO still one of the pioneers of "country rock". The crowd loved 'em. Doug's the only original member.

I saw them one time in Winchester, TN. It was the worst vocals I had ever heard, even worse than the worst bar bands and no steel.

I saw them more recently in Nashville opening for someone, and they sounded great. I guess it's hit or miss when your pushing 60. Mr. Green

No offense meant to anyone pushing 60. Wink

I saw them last year at a stadium show in Tucson. Sounded good and yes there was some steel. I would go again!

I WILL AlWAYS REMEMBER THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND AS BEING ONE OF THE GREATEST SOUTHERN ROCK BANDS.
I FIRST SAW THEM IN 1973 IN DETROIT. THEY WERE THE WARM UP FOR THE ALLMAN BROS. NOBODY UP HERE HEARD OF THEM BACK THEN. THEY EXPLODED ONTO THE STAGE...AND RECECIEVED 2 ENCORES. IT WAS THAT SHOW THAT GAVE ME THE STEEL GUITAR BUG. TOY CALDWELL GOING NOTE FOR NOTE ON STEEL WITH JERRY EUBANKS ON SAX WAS HYPNOTIC.
I MANAGE TO SEE THEM 7 MORE TIMES. ALL WITH TOY STILL IN THE BAND.
I'VE NEVER SEEN THEM LATELY...I HEAR GOOD AND BAD THINGS. IT IS HARD TO DUPLICATE WHAT THE ORIGINAL MEMBER LAID DOWN FOR SO MANY YEARS. THE GUITARIST WHO REPLACED TOY...WAS AWESOME. HE PICKED AND SOUNDED JUST LIKE TOY. BUT I THINK HE'S MOVED ON.
AT THE I.S.G.C. THIS YEAR. I DID SNAP THIS PIC BY ACCIDENT..WHAT LOOKS LIKE DOUG GRAY OF THE MTB STANDING NEXT TO MIKE SWEENEY!..
I WROTE MIKE..BUT NO REPLY YET!!

IF YOU EVER HEARD JIMMY QUEEN SING "NIGHT LIFE"...
HE SOUNDS A LITTLE DOUG ON THE TUNE!!
SOMEONE EARLY UP THIS THREAD... MENTIONED THAT THE SAX/FLUTE PLAYER FROM MTB WAS THE ONLY ORIGINAL MEMBER IN THE GROUP.. IS'NT DOUG GRAY WITH THEM?
FROM THE ORIGINAL BAND, I KNOW TOY AND TOMMY CALDWELL AND GEORGE McKORKLE ALL HAVE PASSED AWAY.
AND THEIR DRUMMER PAUL T. RIDDLE IS IN NASHVILLE I THINK...
ANYBODY REMEMBER "JOHN DAVID CALL"? HE PLAYED WITH PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE. AND DID SOME STUDIO STEEL FOR MTB TOO...

Hey, Andy:
When I was in a band in the mid to late '70s, we covered FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, as it was then current. (The intro was easy to copy.) Toy Caldwell played lead guitar and (not always in tune) pedal steel. I saw the Marshall Tucker Band in concert back then, and I think Toy did play a little steel live. Not great chops, but some nicely placed notes.

Yes, Toy Caldwell was indeed a very fine guitarist. When I heard him live years ago, the band gradually left the stage and he continued jamming solo. Probably too long, unless you were smokin', but he was VERY good. On pedal steel however, he was like a number of other guitarists, such as Ron Wood (in another thread), who were plainly not as proficient on steel as they were on guitar. I don't wish to reopen that debate, but I'm sorry - playing out of tune is NOT good playing. On ANY instrument.
