when you buy one new ?
Having spent over 3300 $ buying a new SD10, i was surprised when i noticed no allen wrenches for adjusting bellcranks, knee levers & split tuning at end of changer were included
no tuning wrench & no manual either
is this standard procedure ?
(now i know Carter & ZumSteel provide these)
when i called the builder (who i won't name) & inquired about this, i was told that allen wrenches are not included
here in Europa, we're metric, so American sized tools are'nt always easy to find unless one orders them from the US
obviously, we sure appreciate when a steel comes w: it's wrenches especially after spending mucho $$$, plus shipping & import taxes
Have Mercy !

CrowBear,
I would email them and tell them that they failed to include said items. If it isn't included, I would let them know how disappointed I was and ask for a list of sizes. Email me a list of the allen wrench sizes, also your address, and I will send them(no charge) to you.

None of the items you mentioned came with my new $2700 Rittenberry either.
Seems like a $2 tuning wrench would be the most useful item that should be included with the purchase.
I was sent a couple of packs of strings (which I don't use, by the vendor)
I would like to note that in this day and age of economic woes, practically every product I purchase is smaller, reduced volumes, or compromised in some manner relative to a couple of years ago, all at the same price, if not higher.
My base pay pay was recently reduced 2.5% in order to avoid company wide lay-offs. I was able to adjust my productivity accordingly. _________________ Always remember you're unique..... Just like everyone else |

Crowbear, you're right on. It costs just a little more for the builder to do this and I have always been of this opinion.
When I brought the steel to Dave Seddon, I had put together a little tool kit of the most used allen keys, nice ones with a long reach. I also included a Robertson screwdriver seeing as how the Robertson screw is the superior screw on the market, but of course not used on steels at all. It looks like you will find this screw only in my steels and those of Fulawka, since Robertson is a Canadian invention. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Crow Bear:
I hope you "suggested" to the builder that they SHOULD be!! I haven't bought a PSG new (just used) but in my MANY electric guitar purchases, Allen wrenches and other tools are routinely included in the case pocket. Particularly for high end instruments (US$3300 CLEARLY is) and ones with trems or other components that the builder would reasonably anticipate the player using/making.
It is remarkable (and somewhat shocking)that a PSG builder/luthier would reply "not included" instead of "I'm so sorry...let me get it in the mail right away." Customer service is an art that needs to practiced. |

I know of one local music store that does not include the allen wrenches that usually come with the guitars. They actually take them out of the case. Their reasoning is that it keeps the buyer from potentially damaging their guitar by trying to adjust the truss rod themselves. I wonder if it's possible that this builder doesn't include any allen wrenches for the same reason? Pretty good reason NOT to include wrenches IMHO. Can you imagine how many guitars have been sent back for a warranty repair because someone who didn't know what they were doing got ahold of it with an allen wrench? I'm sure most of y'all know what you're doing but, there are plenty of others that don't. |

Thank you for your replies gentlemen
Bill, you are very kind (top stuff !)
i might take you up on your offer if the builder does'nt send the wrenches
when i spoke w: the builder over the phone, i did mention, the least they should do, is furnish them items, like some builders do, considering the cost of the instrument & the need for the player to adjust knee levers to his body, as well as tweaking & tuning
it did'nt seem to phase the fellow
David, you probably have a valid point but shucks, when i buy guitbox or a psg, i expect them items to be included
considering the price of a new psg, let it be known to the builders that the client expects these items to be a standard part of the deal
i hope they read this
Thank you
just for the record i'm up to having copped approx 40 psgs for steelers here over the last 8 years
most of them were used & bought here from the fo'bros as well as a few known vendors here
i've always made sure that the wrenches were included & they very rarely, were not included |

Crowbear,
I bought a set of American size wrenches for a few Euro's in a hardware store in Amsterdam.
I think it must be availlable in France as well.
Otherwise let me know, and I will check the price over here.I know it wasn't the original Question, but if I can help, let me know.

I remember gettng a new three bolt 1979 FENDER strat with micro tilt neck adjustment. The guitar came with an allen wrench for the microtilt adjustment in the back on the neck. I was young and it was my first real guitar. The first thing I did (after playing smoke on the water) was to stick that allen wrench i that neck hole and give it a try. I took that strat completely apart just to see how it was put together and nevr once thought about having it "set up" again. But I was 13...not an adult with sense.
Even so , I do think these things should be included. |

i think we should be told the builders name to prepare us for this situation, should we happen to deal with him. this way a deal could be formed 'ahead of time' to make sure you know what you're getting. to me, from this dicussion, he seems somewhat callous and uncaring about the situation. i would not want to deal with him if that is the case.
if you won't offer his name, how about a picture of the steel with a nameplate/logo showing? |

Yeah, I'm not saying they shouldn't be included with a big ticket item like a PSG but you don't want a kid who just bought their first guitar trying to adjust the neck either...............just another point of view, that's all |

Crowbar -
I felt myself actually getting a little angry when I read your post. If I dropped $3300 on a guitar and didn't get everything I needed to even tune it?!?!? - I'd consider sending it back, even it it costs me money(that's how stupid I am )
It's a shame that the excitement of getting a new guitar was apparently spoiled by this ridiculous oversight.
I'm sure you will think twice before dealing with this fellow/brand of steel again.

I would assume this builder has enough demand for his product that he doesn't HAVE TO include these items to sell guitars. Although I agree that having all wrenches needed for adjustment would be a convenience, it's not a deal breaker for me.
Would you buy one of his new guitars again, knowing what you know now, CrowBear?
Don't get me wrong, if I was a builder, I'd include 'em. It's a small price to pay to help insure a satisfied customer. In my business, I always try to give the customer a little something extra.
(edited to say: it's fair to say the proper wrenches aren't an "extra".) |

US Patent 6729 Cummings 1875 United States patent for square headed screw type, pre-dates Robertson's patent. This prior art should have rendered Robertson's patent claims invalid. (Wikpedia)

The last NEW guitar I bought [won't name it] Had NOTHING but the guitar and a little note not to use WD-40 on it. It was good I had a couple of nylon tuner tools that fit.And a couple of strings did need a little adjustment. That is just stupid. If I wanted to change a string gauge,What was I supposed to do ? Maybe send it back to the builder to get it adjusted. HERE'S YOUR SIGN. By the way it was a top dollar PRO guitar. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. Pat, take it easy there.......that was just a joke (note the smiley face).
No, I don't have anything against Canadians. I grew up in Detroit, (you know, that big dirty city just north of Windsor). I Spent a lot of my youth traipsing around Ontario. I'm a rabid Red wings fan, and will drink a LaBatt's at the drop of a hat.
