Topic: Vibroverb vs. Pro Reverb? |

Can anyone with experience with both amps make any comparisons for pedal steel use? I don't care about the tremolo, or midrange control. The speakers aren't a factor either; I'll put the same in either one as I'm planning on building a Weber kit. Both kits would be based on Blackface versions that I would tweak for more headroom.

They are the same amp except for the output transformer - the Pro Reverb used a 4 ohm while the Vibroverb used an 8 ohm OT. If you're building from a Weber kit it would likely have the same multitap OT for either, with the cabinet being the only difference (2-12" vs 1-15").

| Right, Mike. It looks like both kits have the same transformer with 4, 8 and 16 ohm taps, so that eliminates that difference. The Vibroverb has tapped treble pots, while the Pro has bright switches... |

Using Weber components was a wise choice, tell then what u plan to do and they will recommend the correct speakers also!!

The BF version of the VibroVerb didn't have tapped treble pots, the brown 2X10 version did.
The BF ProReverb and BF VibroVerb, are essentially the same circuit, aside from the output transformer.
The BF version of the VibroVerb was more powerful than the brown version, by 5 watts or so. Bigger power transformer...Jerry |

| My '64 Vibroverb is a great steel amp. I like it better than my Twin! As long as you can mike it to avoid headroom issues. When I bought mine, I had a choice of two. One with a Jensen, and one with a JBL. I chose the Jensen. Just sounds so sweet. Got it about 20 years ago, for $1,000. One of my best investments. |

| I assume Jerry is correct. The speaker has a gray frame and bell. The label is "chrome" with blue text. It says "Jensen Concert." The only writing on the frame are the date code and the ohms. |

What's the date code on the speaker? Most Concert series Jensens I've seen have been after market installs, though I haven't seen that many. Got a 12" Concert series hanging on my wall at home though...Jerry |

| 220452. 52nd week of 1964 I believe. Mike Zaite, Dr. Z, said the amp was all original when he checked it out for me at least 10 years ago. He said he'd seen a lot of them in his many years repaing amps, before he started building his own line. |

Ha.. reviving a dead thread here.. cause im probably selling my silver face Pro cause I found a VibroVerb and they are a bit redundant...
HEADROOM ISSUES!?!? with 40 tube watts and the JBL!?!?

I had a ‘64 Vibroverb clone with a Telonics neo 15†and all the PSG steel tweaks. I definitely had headroom issues even with a normal vol band. Unless I mic’ed it, it didn’t quite cut it. And the weight was bad. I wondered, “heck, why not play a Twin Reverb?†I finally gave up on it and now use a BF Showman head instead. It just wasn’t worth the back pain.
For low vol gigs, it was nice. Great tone. But for those types of gigs, I prefer a non-reverb BF Deluxe. I decided that paired 6L6 based amps are not my favorite for PSG. Just my decision. As they say YMMV.

The Brown VV won't get you the same headroom as you can't turn down the mids which are thicker than the Blackface mids. The choice of Speaker is key to more head room! Look for the highest sensitivity rating as you can. 100 or 101db will be a screamer! Also 6550's can give you a warmer cleaner tone than most 6L6's.
