News spread today to shocked friends and fans that local musician Amy Farris had died over the weekend. As a member of Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, Farris played the fiddle, viola and sang harmony vocals. An Austin, Texas native, Farris moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to record a solo album produced by Dave Alvin. She also played backup for a number of musicians including Exene Cervenka, Stan Ridgway, Brian Wilson, Peter Case and Ray Price.

According to newspaper Austin 360, Farris was found dead in her Los Angeles home. Suicide is suspected, but the cause of death is still being investigated. Farris was 40 years old.

Oh my God...what a shock. How sad. A terrible loss.
I was fortunate enought to play on her 'Anyway' LP, and she struck me as someone full of life and promise, and just as sweet as she could be.
Rest easy, Amy. I'll always miss you.

What a shame. Last night I loaded the Dave Alvin and the GW CD into my mp3 player and listened to it first thing this morning, before I read your post. RIP.

Sad, sad song. Amy and I played several casual gigs together when she lived in Austin. She had a lot of snap and pizazz, and I thought a great future. And it's even harder when the young ones leave us, with so much left to say.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?
