Hi, Thanks in advance for any good ideas.
I just bought a new hard shell case for my Regal reso and I am flying tomorrow. I'll be checking it in with the other luggage. How should I protect it? Tom Bradshaw said I should wrap it in bubble-wrap with duct tape. Anybody done that before? Don

I'm a professional guitar shipper at a vintage guitar shop, so I do know a little about this.

Was Tom talking about the bubble wrap inside or out side the case?

If there's any way you can come up with a guitar box, that would be ideal! Pack the case inside the box with styrofoam peanuts (ideal), bubble wrap or newspaper.

If you can't get a box, at least make sure that you loosen the strings. This really isn't as important for regular guitars as we use to think, but for reso guitars it's critical! Also make something to raise up the strings to keep the cone and delicate bridge from getting crushed with an impact. Pack the headstock inside the case with paper so it won't be affected by a sudden shock. Anything you can use to pad inside the case is great, but remember that the cone can easily be collapsed if you put too much pressure on it.

Good luck!

Hi Rick, Tom's idea was to bubble-wrap the outside of the case. Thanks a lot for your professional advice. Don

Remember that often the guitar will be inspected and your packaging will be pulled apart. Try to make it easy and simple enough for a cretin to put back together.

Most airlines allow a bag and a personal item. It's easiest to carry it with you and put it in the overhead. If it won't fit you can have it checked at the gate and pick it up when you arrive at your gate. This way you avoid it being crushed and thrown around. Make sure you get in line early to board so there is space in the overhead when you get on the plane. jc

I flew with my Martin and my Reso once. I had my buddy, who had no carry on, take one of the two as his. They fit in the overhead just fine.
