So I need some cds with pedal steel on them. I want to learn some classic licks and background runs.
Can someone suggest some classics ? E9 country/alt country styles

Love the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album.
I would also recommend anything from Buck Owens that would have Ralph Mooney or Tom Brumley playing steel guitar. Also check out Rick Nelson stuff with Tom Brumley.

I've been listening a lot lately to Charley Pride's "In Person" album, live at Panther Hall with Lloyd Green. I was lucky enough to find it on vinyl for $1! I've been meaning to convert it to CD. The steel playing is awesome, it's featured nicely in the mix, and the songs are classics. |

Probably the best for LEARNING is Sweatheart, what do you guys think?
all of the ones mentioned have incredible steel on em, but some might be a little too advanced to learn from? |

Jim - you meant "A Trip in the Country"? I assumed the double entendre was intentional but you may know the story there..... I did not know that BE played steel on that which explains why it sounded so good |

How about Waylon Jennings "Honky Tonk Heroes?"
That to me is some of the consummate steel playing in backing a vocalist by Ralph Mooney. _________________ Mark |

How about Neil Young's Harvest for "alt country" a term I don't really understand but Neil seems to be a big influence in that genre . Edited to include Al Perkins esp. with Manassas . |

Be advised that several of the suggestions are out of print. Trip in the Country and Charlie Pride for example...That does not mean you should not seek these out used or on vinyl, in fact that is a exactly what you should do. those two are essential |

I recently checked out the Bear Family records 10 CD Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys boxed set from the Portland public library. If you like Don Helms, Buddy Emmons, and Jimmy Day this set will be to your liking! |
