It was bound to happen sometime...

I feel like I've been living in a parallel universe of great shuffles with only positive audience response and great musical fellowship with monster players for the last few years.

Well, it all came to an end last Friday.

McCabe's Beach Club ( now Larry's) has decided that our band, The California Rangers has been getting too much money to have so much fun, so after we balked at taking a large pay cut, we were axed unceremoniously.

Just want to say THANKS to all the steelers who came down to participate or just support live real country music over the years!

I wish you all as much fun as I've had every Friday afternoon playing steel guitar! You guys who were there, know what I'm talking about. I've been a really lucky steel player, and for that I'm grateful!

I am so bummed Rick. Your gig was one of the last "real deal" shows around. I am routing for you to get a better (local) one!

Say it ain't so! Well Rick, you know what a fan I am. Keep me posted on your next gigs. Maybe the next ones will be when I'm not working also, even though I was serious about quitting just to see you play once again. haha

Thanks for the sympathetic words guys! I'm gonna live, I promise! It really hasn't quite hit me yet, probably after my first Saturday morning without a "headache" it'll probably sink in. Wink

Honestly, now I can fess up...the place is a dump. It was the music every Friday and people that made it work. Alot of our friends were really starting to get miffed at the lack of noticeable air conditioning this last summer. But hey, at Larry's, "We pay no Expense!!!" Razz

I think one of the factors that made the whole thing special was the fact that so many steel players could make a day of it by visiting Jim Palenscar's steel shop 5 minutes away, and then coming to see us. Because of the large pool of steel players wanting to play these tunes that I got to play every week, I had no trouble finding subs for me whenever our bass player subbed out and I went over to bass.

The list was really impressive!!!!

Frank Carter, Jay Dee Maness, Gerry Dawg Walker,Jim Palenscar,Kevin Ryan, Mike Smith, Dag Wolf, John McClung, Dean Parks, Mike Small (aka Memphis Slim), Dave Van Alan, Jim Eaton, Doug Meyer, Dave Berzansky, Tim "SteelBone" Cook, Thomas Yearsley, and sometimes........me.

Thanks again everybody!

May the fleas from a 1000 camels infest the crotch and armpits of the club owner. Jody.

Major bummer for everyone involved. I gotta think the club owner is going to regret his decision. You guys always had a good crowd especially considering the hours. How the hell else are they going to bring anyone in the door from 4 to 9? I heard that you'll still be there once a month, did I hear wrong?

Darn it! It was too good to be true. WTF!!!???

I hope the "Rangers" find a new home so we can build up a similar scene. It was such a good vibe. It just needs a new home. Maybe a place with A/C.

even though I moved back to nor-cal recently I still wanted to come back down to McCabes and shoot myself at the bar while you were playing. I really enjoyed hearing a real country band and you guys were definitely country. so anyway look at the bright side . You now have time to hone your shipping and receiving skills.....

Yeah thanks Jimmy. Oh Well I was looking at my honky tonk life as something to fall back on when my shipping days are done, but oh well.

Slim...I just heard we are booked to play there on the 16th. They want to try us once a month. I personally am not gonna go in there for less money though. It's just not a good policy. We'll see what the money is. I'm already filling up my calendar.

Rick, is the new moron owner doing away with live bands on Friday, or just going to use cheaper bands?

Their pay scale wasn't much to write home about in the first place, but as we all know, some bands will play for any piddling amount offered by greedy clubs, thus lowering the bar for everyone, and in many cases driving true pro players virtually out of the business.

I'm going to miss filling in for you, the great times with all the cool cats in the band, and many of the nice folks who were your fans there. I'll even miss the cool DJ who comes on after the Rangers, he played such great R&B stuff!

Sad - oh well- maybe you could could just come to the shop and give seminars on Friday afternoons instead- charge local steelers $10-$20/head - and make out better in the long run? (always thinkin'...always thinkin')~ I'll even pony-up the headache Smile
