We were fascinated by Ernie Coker's stories about how when Spade Cooley came to town his steel guitarist Joaquin" Murphey always asked Ernie up to play a couple of numbers.
The Time at Sol Hoopii's apartment when listening to a Spade Cooley broadcast, Sol asked Ernie "How does he do that ? "
I never knew Ernie was a pupil of Sol's, and I wasn't familiar with the number Ernie played that he said Sol used to play on the Hawaii Calls Show.. Totally fascinating and invaluable information.

I'd sure like to hear more from Ernie about Sol and Hawaii Calls. That would have been during David Kelii's day's and he rarely was gone from that gig, and when he was he would only let Benny Rogers take his place. There must be an interesting story behind Sol's (short) involvement with HC.
I remember one thing about Sol hearing/seeing Joaquin for the first time. They were watching TV at Ernie's as Spade and the gang did their thing on some program. Sol was watching Murph intently and shushing anyone that spoke. He was humbled by what he witnessed.

This is a link directly to the set where I play the Chris Drew "Bristolian" (3/4 size weissenborn style) and the Harry Shepard "Harbour Lights" guitars, (and My Fender 1000 and 1970 Emmons SD10.)
I could only take a few of my guitars to Chanos due to space limitations in the car.

Basil, I really love the tone out of the Fender 1000 in particular. It sounds beautiful and you play it so well.

Wow !  I don't think I've ever hear anyone play a Weissenborn as well as this. 
And the lap steel was superb. "Sand" was magnificent.
Basil: like fine wine you seem to get better every year.  It's time to bring out another CD for your fans.  |

Stellar playing as ever Basil, thanks for posting the videos!
I must admit I got a warm glow inside hearing that little guitar in such capable hands, you really do it justice!
Please forgive my ignorance but do you care to share with us the song & tuning?
Such a smooth languid style, effortlessly sliding into cheekyness around 1.50... sweet!
Also the HarbourLights sounds immense!
The little Bristolian sure is in good company!
Thank you so much for taking it along to the festival (good job she's just a baby otherwise you'll just have to get a bigger car hehe!)

Chris, I visited Basil a few weeks ago and was very impressed with the Bristolian guitar. In fact I was so impressed with it that I borrowed it from Basil and, over the next few weeks, performed with it at several folk clubs in the Birmingham area.
It was very well received, although on at least two occasions I was praised for my "slack guitar" playing.  I guess you can't win them all. |
