I thought some of you guys & gals might want to see my "GigRig". I was given a 2'x4' aluminum roadsign (believe it or not it said: end road work!) I framed it out w/ pine 2x2s' & had it sprayed w/ Rhinoliner(for pickup beds). Then I mounted everything you see (including the guitar) to the base. I built a fold out for a drum throne to sit on & attached 2 handles on each end. My wife made a cover out of boatcover material & it attaches w/ snaps. The whole shebang fits in the back of my Nissan pickup(w/ camper). Two ppl. can easily carry it. It weighs less than the flight case for my LDG! All I have to do when I get to a gig is:carry in the GigRig,remove cover, plug in my amps & FX,run 2 guitar cables from FX to amps & I'm finished!BTW: The Carpsteel is a killer little axe,I love it. Weighs 21lbs. by itself,30 lbs. in its' case w/ tone & sustain to the bone!

Nice set up! I woulda kept the "END ROADWORK" though!
I always carried a piece of 3/4" MDF for use on those old barroom stages that had ancient shag carpet with padding. My Kline would just sink into those old stinky carpets! I just cut "monkey grip" holes to carry it. |

I see you play guitar and steel. Do you play guitar and steel with thumb and finger picks or do you change picks when you change instruments?
Thanks,
Jack |

Jack, I also play both. Here are the picks I use for both, when playing onstage with a country band. In the Blues band, I use bare fingies.
You can use the double-sided index pick eggs ackley like a flat pick. I use a short-bladed thumbpick, and just kinda put it against the index pick as if I were holding a flat pick. Haven't used a flatpick since the early '70s. |

David, That is a neat rig you have there! That's how some people do it...have the thing set up in the band bus or whatever. Did you consider lockable casters with it? Or is that not practical at all? I thought it would be OK where it is smooth enough to roll it...like across the hall floor up to the stage.
As for the Carp..could you elaborate further? I haven't read much about them but seeing how Gary Carpenter makes them as well as the Rains, I figured it has to have good tone and also great quality. You have stock pup in it? Would you be able to give us a sound clip? _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Thanx guys,I guess you could say I'm gettin' lazy in my old age! Jack: I do a lot of trio work,so most of the time I play gtr & steel,so I have to keep my thumbpick & fingerpicks on (w/ the exception being when I have to play certain rock songs like Sweet Home Alabama). I use a Boss A/B box to switch on the fly (ala Jr. Brown, wish I sounded like him!) I also use a Roland GR-20 gtr synth. The gtr & steel go thru my Hilton VP so it's separate from the GR 20 so I can "blend" the gtr & synth. It all goes into a small mixer then to my FX>amps. John: That is an awesome idea! Where can I get some of those FPs? Do you make them or buy them? Bent: I've been trying to find a way to put wheels on the GigRig,but I want something that is fast & easy to put on & take off & haven't been able to find anything that works.I tried some pop in casters & it started to put a lot of strain on the base so I took them off. I have had the Carpsteel since March & I love it! It took some adjustments in my posture & approach to playing. LOTS of difference from an LDG(which I've played since '77). The PUP is stock & wound to about 20K(I think),but it has a diode in it that eliminates hum. John Clark (Moe Bandys steelman) tried it out a coupla weeks ago & really liked it. I think he may get one for doing roadwork. I've played the Carp on a few demo trax but I'm not authorized to release any of it yet(copyright!) I'll try to get a clip posted ASAP.Thanx>>>dg _________________ http://www.myspace.com/davidagriffin |

Bent (& everyone): I just remembered that Gary Carpenter has some clips of him playing the Carpsteel on the Rains YouTube pg. Check it out. There's a link to it on the Rains' webpage.>>>dg _________________ http://www.myspace.com/davidagriffin |

David,
I recall someone was selling something similar a year or so ago here on the Forum. I made mine. I just cut the blade off an extra pick, and silver soldered them together. Regular solder might also work, but the silver solder is quite strong. They work very well. I even play some Doc Watson flatpicking stuff with them. |

That's ingenuity!....now all you need is a motor and a steering wheel......and you won't need your truck...... |
