Probably like most of you, I was initially introduced to Mike Perlowin through the SGF. My day job takes me all over the country so I have had the opportunity to hang out with Mike in LA several times. He’s always a great host. Even knows where the good BBQ is in Pasadena of all places. Laughing

Anyway, last Saturday I googled a particular instrument I have been looking for and a nice deal popped up on Craig’s List in Los Angeles. I live in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA. Naturally I was suspicious and nervous about making the purchase without checking it out. Another mutual friend here in Atlanta came up with the idea “Call Mike and see if he can check it out for you”. I called Mike and he in turned called the seller and called me right back and said “It’s about 30 miles but I heading over there right now because somebody else is coming at 3:00 PM.” In about an hour Mike and the seller call me together and Mike says it is exactly as advertised. I pushed the button on PayPal and in 10 seconds the seller says “I see I have the money on my iPhone and I am giving Mike the guitar”. (Sort of like a high tech Grand Cayman bank heist movie, isn’t it? Shocked )

Mike did a packaging job like I have never seen and took the instrument to FedEx on Monday. Today it arrived with no damage and is exactly what I was looking for.

Mike didn’t have to do any of this but he went out of way to immediately get to the seller and close the deal on my behalf. THANKS MIKE!!!

Gee, I'm embarrassed Embarassed and don't know what to say.

Bill and I are buds. As he pointed out, we hang out together whenever he comes to town. He would undoubtedly do the same thing for me if the situation was reversed. I think that holds true for everybody here who has befriended one another.

Bill, I hope you're happy with the bass. It really is a beauty.

David, I like the way you think. And the first law of my administration will be that there has to be a steel guitar solo on every record made during my tenure in office.

The second will be that the crime of stepping on a steel guitarist by a lead guitar player shall carry the death penalty. At all trials for this crime, the jury will consist of 12 steel players.

And the 3rd will be the establishment of a war on banjos, and a new agency, the FBBE. (Federal Bureau of Banjo Eradication) b0b will be in charge of this. He will be my "banjo czar."

Seriously, I want to thank everybody for all the kind words and well wishes. We really are a extended family. Herb Steiner and I were talking after the convention about how we don't go to hear the music nearly as much as we do to see our friends from other places who we meet there. (For those who don;t already know, Herb and I were friends in high school who lost touch with each other for about 15 years, and were reunited because of our mutual love for the steel.)

Getting back to the event that precipitated this thread, I still say that if any one of us here asked a friend in another city to check out an instrument, we all would have done the same thing. Helping out our friends is what friendship is all about. Bill would certainly have done that same thing for me if I had asked.

Now Bill, you gotta take some pictures of that gorgeous white bass and let everybody see what a beauty she is.

Yes, it is an American Vintage 62 P bass that is absolutely brand new and was significantly less than the best prices for a new one. Did I really need it? No? But anyway, you know the story...........

Here's a pictire of the shipping box. Mike crumpled up most of the LA Yellow pages in single sheets to provide a cushion!!!!

Thanks agan!

Bill, 62 was a very good year, graduated high school and joined the Marines. That sucker doesn't even look like it has one bit of neck or fret wear, at least according to the pics. Was it ever used at all? Do you know it's history?

Wow, Dick! You joined in '62. I remember the day in '78 when you were sitting on a bench working on a GRC-112 at MACS-6 when I met you. Had no idea you were so old corps Laughing

Back on topic...It is a one year old bass. The model is a replica of the 1962 edition. The neck is a little wider at the nut than they are today and it has much nicer machine heads.

Take care, Dick. Come back down and see us some time.

I agree, Mike is a nice guy, I was out in the LA area a month or so ago and gave Mike a call to find out more about the local steel scene. He was a big help with great recommendations on who to see and where. My stay was too short to get out in the evening after a long day at work, sandwiched between flying in and out, but I hope to get out there again on a longer assignment and get some time to check out some of the area players.

And a matching white speaker too!

I was only 4 years old when that was built!

But, does it sound as good as the black ones?

Just wanted to chime in and say Mike's a long-time forum friend who I've met at Scotty's a number of times.

David, curb your enthusiasm. Thinking back to the Off-Topic Board days here on the forum, I would never vote for Mike for President. Smile

Mike, that's very thoughtful what you did in looking out for Bill.

You're only 5 years old? (Look at Bill's post again again, it's a reissue, made last year.)

This seems as good a place as any to mention that tentative plans are underway to bring the leader of my classical music trio to the SWSGA show in Phoenix next year. (I call it "My Trio" but it's really hers.)

Her name is Carole Mukogawa. She is a member of the L.A. Philharmonic, and an A-list Hollywood session player. Here is a link to some of the recordings she has played on:

http://music.barnesandnoble.com/Artist/Carole-Mukogawa/c/153749

You can see why I feel so honored that she has asked me to play with her.

Carole has fallen in love with the pedal steel guitar, and wants to come do our thing for my set, and hear all the other great players.

Our cellist can't make it, so we would have to bring in a local one and come 2 days early to rehearse, but this is not an insurmountable obstacle.

I can't promise that this will happen, but we're going to make the attempt.
