The Bosstone is basically a fuzz, but when used with a lot of reverb and octave strings, it can simulate a great sounding string or fiddle section. you have to really play with the settings to get the exact sound you want. I can say the older Jordan's are great sounding units. I have not tried the newer models of the Bosstone but I understand them to be every bit as good as the older ones. I use mine alot for the rock & roll stuff at dances. Best of luck to you. Zeke

It's a fuzz effect. It goes from a mid square wave distortion sound to a saturated fuzz sound. People have used the saturated fuzz with a volume pedal to emulate violins. Mahoney makes a nice copy of the original. There are sound samples on the site:

I never got mine to do a good string section sound back in the day (didn't have any kind of delay---or good enough ears Smile but did use one to good effect for sirens, truck and race car sounds!! I thought it was a little too over fuzzed for the Duane Allman slide sound that I wanted to do so I had an old Tube driver distortion unit for that.

I haven't used my Boss Tone in years/decades, but I remember that to get the string section sound you not only need the Boss Tone, you also need to play two strings in unison. And I believe it was Jeff Newman that said the two strings should be slightly out of tune to each other. That fattens up the effect considerably. The second and fourth strings seem to be the natural choice as the unisons.
