I'm returning to my old haunts this Saturday evening (6-8pm EDT) to play in the staff band on "Heartlands Hayride" (or as my wife calls it 'Heartless Hayride") on 89.7FM in Sergeantsville NJ.
"Heartlands Hayride" LIVE radio and web simulcast Saturday 09-25-04 6pm to 8pm Eastern
Program #200 this week: after a recent shake-up in the personnel and some other behind the scenes goings on, the show persists, and I was invited to participate this weekend. I was the original staff steeler on this broadcast when it started back in September '00, and played regularly into 2002 and sporadically since.
"Heartlands Hayride" is a locally (NJ near Princeton) produced LIVE 2 hour weekly show dedicated to entertainment with a "down home" flavour. The acts have been selected from auditioners from the surrounding New Jersey hills, and range from neophytes to relatively seasoned singers, story tellers, etc...
The instrumentation is minimalist (no drums likely unless the Sugardaddies drummer 'Cochise' plays) There are a few "band features," and I will be sharing the fills and solos behind many of the performers on Pedal Steel (Probably the ZumSteel U12)
Featured Steel Guitar instrumental this week will be "Maiden's Prayer" at approximately 7:15 pm EDT

Hey Dave be nice to my girls, Judy,Lucy and Joanne this weekend. I was supposed to do that show but I told Kenny Burd I'd help him out at the VFV in Flemington. I'll try to stop in for a while so we can finally meet face to face. |

Dave---I listened to a goodly potion of the show---in & out of the computer room while doing other stuff (multi-tasking sonuvagun that I am) and running in when something caought my ear (frequently since you were all over the whole two hours). Enjoyed it tremendously.
Took some short notes until I got bored doing it---there was a I-VI-II-V song early on where you threw in that circus quote that cracked me up. There was a moment in another song--Big River? when you proceeded to the II, riding on a verse while everyone else hung on the one and I laughed again because haven't we all been there with an unrehearsed situation and nobody tells you what they're going to do and god punishes you for taking initiative. I dug how many times the audience showed real appreciation when you did something good. Ain't that refreshing? (hope the MC wasn't prompting them) There was a singer there who sounding like he was trying to sound like Jimmy Dickens on ballads, don't you think? I thought one of the women singers was quite good--one of the Chicklets, I think? Sort of had some Reba going for her.
Beautiful fat "orchestral" glisses on 'He Stopped Loving Her Today". REAL nice Maiden's Prayer.
Without any more notes I can only repeat--nice job. |

Jon-
You Were Taking NOTES? yikes!
I'm usually so 'in the moment' (stream of consciousness) I couldn't tell you what I played where
I hate to disillusion ya, most of the audience response (particularly the cowbell) is indeed "prompted" for effect for the radio broadcast, and is more startling than gratifying in the flow of the show, but I received several compliments from individuals as the crowd filed out which I put considerably more stock in. They may not 'know music', but they know what they like...

I enjoy the challenge of walking into a room and not knowing what's coming next 'cept maybe the title & key... spent a lot of my honky tonkin life doing exactly that. As for the 'glitches'and 'clams' they are gone off into the aether and lost.

That note taking thing sure makes me look weird...uh...weirder than I really am. It's just that when I realized that I was going to listen to more than a couple of minutes, stuff I wanted to mention kept jumping into my head and the chances of even remembering where I was last night were going to be slim without a post-it or two tacked into my forehead.
The seat-of-the-pants gig is pretty much what I know too although my weekly residency thing allows me to be able to brief any subs that 'this song holds chord form thoughout' or 'hold on the I and watch the singer until he gets on mic and starts the next verse' etc.
I had forgotten to mention but your tag explains---superb tone. Came over the radio very well. |
