For those who couldn't attend can you tell us anything about Barbara Mandrell's induction to the steel guitar hall of fame. Was she there and did she make any comments? Does she still play pedal steel or even own one? anything will be appreciated. Thanks

She was there and accepted the award very graciously.
She didn't play but she did stay around for pics. No mention was made of her having a steel.

I hoped she at least would sing, but I guess when she retired, she RETIRED.

Barbara has played steel for a long time. Her first teacher was Norm Hamlet (sp?) and her second was Mike "Cookie" Jones. They were both at her side as she accepted the award. She introduced their set.

She plays...

She is the reason I took up the steel guitar.

As she said, she is retired. She didn't say much about that part. Only that she is. On the program she was listed as "non-preforming artist." I guess that should say it.

i think she was a great steel player. I saw a tv show about her house and she had a music room in the house. They showed drums, guitar saxophone and other instruments but no steel.

I didn't see much in her autobiography about steel playing. I wish somebody would do an interview with her about her steel playing days and her current view of the instrument.

Just curious... What person or group nominated Barbara Mandrell for this award?
I love when she does her multi-instrument thing. She plays good Saxaphone, too.

Barbara's quad neck Wright custom is in the country Music Hall of Fame. She was an outstanding steel player and played many times on national TV. When I spoke with her she said she hadn't picked in 12 years but I think she has done very little music related activities the last 10 years(since she retired).

To this day, outside of a gig, when someone asks what a steel guitar is, I will ask them if they remember the Barbara Mandrell Show on TV. If they say yes, I will reference "that thing she would sit down on, and play". Nearly always, they will remember. She did a lot for raising the visibility of our instrument...

I can remember Barbara just a whalin' the tar out of a white Emmons on her TV show. It's a shame for all of us that she gave it up. Sure wish I could play like that. Oh Well

I just reread Barbara's autobiography, "Get to the Heart." She consistently says that she is a steel guitar player who sings. The steel was her first love and the instrument that brought her to country music.

Her web site proudly states that she just became the first female in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. http://www.barbara-mandrell.com/

Joe Maphis "discovered" her as a steel player when she was eleven.
