I now know I should have aquired this video long before now but a close friend brought me one back from St.Louis. I have been a fan of Curleys' playing since his Danny Boy ride on Charlie McCoy's album long ago. Never had the pleasure of seeing him live but caught him on Hee Haw and some of the youtube short clips. I watched the entire dvd yesterday and was literally stunned at his dynamics(a seemingly lost part of music), his phrasing(a true stylist), and his virtually never ending imagination. Many thanks to Mike Perlowin and all involved in this ever so valuable project. Mike Douchette's post about heart is so evident on this DVD. His playing to me is at that level that most of us can only dream to emulate and has that certain special quality that only a handful of players have ever reached. I guess you can say I highly reccomend this DVD.
thanks,
Billy |

I have HUNDREDS of copies sitting in boxes in my garage.
The DVD is also available from the forum catalog, Scotty's music, Russ Rask up in Washington state, and the South West Steel Guitar Association. (I think Billy Easton has them.)
As I've said before, I felt obligated to make this available. If I had done this, this valuable footage would have been lost to posterity. I couldn't let that happen. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Mike, I got 2 of those DVD's off you..one for me and one for a steel buddy in Norway, Nils Farstad.
I also have a neat anecdote to share....
I dropped in at a machine shop a while back to pick up some steel legs that the proprietor had shortened for Dave Seddon's steel.
His son (around 35 yo)was there when I came to pick them up and when he handed me the legs, he asked: What are these for? I said: A pedal steel guitar.
He says: REALLY?? Do you play the steel?? Hesitantly I said : Yes...
He said: Do you know Curly Chalker??
The guy almost floored me. Imagine..out of all the people you meet, no one even knows what a steel guitar looks like. Then you meet some young guy in a machine shop and he starts talking about Chalker!!
As it turns out, this man, Joey, is a devoted steel fan and has got Curly's playing in his head. He dropped by my shop a while back and I showed him what a steel is made of and demoed it with a tune (the only tune I know)
Just a golden opportunity for me to warmly recommend Curly's DVD to y'all. Order one from Mike, you won't regret it. You will have a collector's item since this is the only real live DVD of Curly's work.
I'll get off my soapbox now... _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars
