Since participating in the Humor section of the Forum, I’ve developed a special friendship with those who post here. So many of us see one another at other functions; however, our International friends aren’t always “regulars” at the steel shows. I thought it would be awesome to gather some of the gang for a little jam sometime over the weekend. Options for a space were almost nil, until Scotty contacted us with some good news. He had made arrangements for us to use a room on the lobby level in the smaller tower. He also provided the equipment we would need for a small gathering. Some of us would be meeting Tony and Lyn Davis, David Donald, John and Anne Marie O’Keeffe, and others for the first time. All the guys played steel – but other instruments as well. Tony’s wife, Lyn has a lovely voice and included us all in singing several upbeat, fun tunes. Anne Marie (AMOK) has a beautiful voice, and left us all speechless after Amazing Grace. Tony Davis ran into Sarah Jory on her way back from the gym. Of course, there’s nothing shy about Tony – and yes, he asked Sarah to join us. She “blessed” John O’Keeffe’s new Zum by playing a few pieces. And she graciously posed for a group shot.
Tommy Dodd ended the jam with a special welcome and thank-you to our international Friends, playing AMERICA. It was MAGIC!! Thanks for all who made it – and I promise we’ll try to make it happen again next year!
To you, Scotty – a huge smooch and thanks for caring!!! And thanks also to Tim for all your help!

These arrangements came together very quickly, and we were unable to reach but a handful of people. (Some of those we got the word to couldn’t find the room in the Atrium.)

Hi y'all.
I just got back from Nashville this AM, and did drive back from Nice ( 4 hours) directly. with no sleep in 28 hours... but got back safely.
Great set of pics, which only aproximate how good a time was had.
We just kept swapping round and new people coming in and lots of laughing and joking.
I had a great time jamming with Tommy Dodd, we did a couple of real fast duets, and and this cat can play...
Tony D. played several nice solos on Dobro, Walter kept a good groove going on rhythmn guitar.
And a host of singers doing fine country, no matter where on the globe they hailed from.
We had several people walk in and play, that I never was able to put names to faces, but all did greatmusically.
I also must note how brave Sarah was in sitting in with us.
She plays Day / or if you'er a Brit ; "Gordon Huntley" set up,
and John O'K.s super new steel is Emmons set up,
but she STILL played several numbers on it giving it a great christening.
Classy lady there! And a lot of fun too. I hope to play with her again in the future.
Get me a bigger pic of this one with me and herself please.
We were all having such a good time we was lat gittin' the amps and such back down stair5s, but I don't think Scotty slapped Miss Donna's wrist over it.
I did miss Gene Jones at the jam, but I did get to see him a bit at the Hawaiian room, but in general not enough during the show.
Hi guy great to finally meet you.
I did a lot of upright bass, and "mandolele" for a lot of wonderful Hawaiian players inculding forumite Roy Ayers on his new SUPRISE Excell steel.
I also missed seeing/ hearing Jody Carver on stage, though I can see why he wa s"a man in demand" at this show.
I had also missed him in the Hawaiian room.
I finally had given up looking around to just meet him and went to eat...
when low an behold...
he and Marylin just sat down a few tables over.
So we did have about an hour and a half or longer get together in and around our food.
It was quite a pleasure for me to finally meet two of my favorite people from the forum.
And on such a great day for them both, with Jody's induction.
Unfortunately the stage coach from Calf. was a bit late getting in( indian raids mebe) and so b0b wasn't there yet, but we all thought he was there in spirit anyway.
Down in NAshville I ran into Tony and Lynn and Smiley several times on Music Row too.
I played electric mandolin with Smiley's regular country gig band for much of the evening up in Galantin last Saturday,
Mr. Grin can sure rip it up on that old Sho-Bud of his too!
I think I saw himself more than anyone else on this trip.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 15 September 2004 at 01:40 PM.] |
