Love the Fender sound, Doug.
Do you play Wailana (Drowsy Waters)? I play it on my Dual Pro. eight.
It takes a lot of work to get the harmonics just right. |

It's very early here...so I may not be all there yet, but I was just unabashedly chair dancing in my studio listening to your clip Doug. It was actually borderline headbanging, if that's possible with this genre!
Thanks so much for sharing this, it's just wonderful, I love how you move the melody around to different registers! _________________ Lap-n-Console Steel Guitar Lessons |

You know what it is? This song is just infectious, it has a very happy, uplifting sound to it.
It really is "The Song of The Islands", the title is very fitting.
On another note: My Jazz Real Book (Hal Leonard version) actually has the lead sheet to this song and if my memory serves me correctly, it states that Satchmo played this song????

Thanks again, guys!
The song was written by Charles E. King, published in 1915.
Mr. King also compiled and published three large collections of Hawaiian songs. They were beautiful books with about 100 songs and lots of interesting and historic pictures of Hawaii (1920s). King was really a "keeper of the flame" for Hawaiian music and culture. He also wrote "Imi Au Ia Oe" ["Serenade"], "Beautiful Kahana", "Ke Kali Nei Au" ["Hawaiian Wedding Song"], "Me Nei?" ["How About Me?"], "Paauau Waltz", "Dreaming, Aloha, of You", "Lei Aloha, Lei Makamae", "Forevermore", and "Home in Hawaii".
Count Basie recorded a jazz version of "Song of the Islands", and it's possible that some other jazz guys did too.
Last year forum member Eddie Cunningham sent me a batch of Hawaiian song books, and as I was poking through them, playing some of the songs... I ran across "Song of the Islands". The melody sounded familiar, and then it hit me! The song is in the classic movie "It's a Wonderful Life". On their wedding night, in the old house, in the rain, Mary puts a record on the record player... "Song of the Islands"... do you remember that?

You are getting into good territory there Doug, keep it up
Drowsy Waters is the tune that put Jerry Byrd on the map, so-to-speak. It was played on many radio stations when it came out, mostly country music stations. |

I really enjoyed the little article on Charles E. King, never knew he went to Kamehameha.
I also noticed the article referred to "Song of the Islands" in the Hawaian "Na Lei O Hawaii". There's a reason this was his first hit, it's so catchy
And to follow up, I looked in my Jazz Fakebook (Hal Leonard) and I had to laugh because they associate Song of the Island with: Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Ben Webster (?)

Doug,
The Rhode Island SGA is the same weekend as the HSGA. Anything going on there?
I gigged this summer at Belle Mer in Newport for a wedding and was delightfully surprised by the enthusiasm the crowd had for the Hawaiian music.
I remember thinking: "I've got to get back to RI soon!"

I have heard Song of the Islands many, many times. It is one Hawaiian song that I never tire of hearing.
It is a classic.
Doug, that sounded nice! Love to hear you play more Hawaiian tunes.
I also have the Charles King books and they are great for old Hawaiian songs. I play many of these songs in my performances.
Aloha,
Don |
