I've taken the advice of lots of folks here and spent some time working on songs I like that have steel on them and trying to figure out the parts.
I've been working on a Karla Bonhoff song called "Home". It has a very nice, simple little steel part that I think was played by Dan Dugmore. The song is in E, and I have a Emmons setup with 3 pedals and 5 levers. I'd appreciate any other suggestions on how I might play this....
1) The verse goes from E to F#m to A...I've been playing the E on the 7th fret, B pedal down and squeezing in the A, then sliding the E on the 6th string up to the 9th fret (F#) to imply the F#m chord, then playing the A on the 5th with no pedals.
2) The ending of the chorus has a G to F#m to Bsus to B change. I've been playing the G on the 10th fret, strings 3, 4, & 5, B pedal down and rolling in the A, to the F#m on the 12th fret,, B pedal down and rolling in the A pedal on strings 4, 5, & 6, then the Bsus on the 7th with the B pedal down, and releasing it to resolve the chord to B.
I'm pretty excited - I'm starting to get to a point where I can kinda hear chord inversions and string grip choices on the PSG. If you can't tell, I've been playing all afternoon and I'm pretty stoked. I love this instrument.... _________________ "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Aint' Got That Swing" |

What a fabulous tune from a fabulous singer! I have a lot of her music. You're correct, it is Dan Dugmore doing a bang up job on that tune.
I'd have to dig it out and listen to it again, but I'm thinking I'd probably play the E at 7AB, the F#m at 5A, the A at fret 5 open then back to the E at 7AB.
I thought that run at the end of the chorus was a 3b, 4, 5 [frets 3, 5 and 7 open w/ the b pedaled in for the sus] but you may be correct about the 2m.
I'll have to revisit the tune when I have my guitar set up.
If I can come up with some useful suggestions for the tune I'll let you know.
Best of luck. |

Hey Jerry,
Thanks a ton - I can do a pretty fair job of picking this kind of thing out on good ol 6 string, but the PSG? Well, it's a brave new world for me! Glad you like her music - she wrote so many great songs for other artists, but had a heck of a voice on her own, too. I did an acoustic guitar clinic a few months ago, and the other artist was Nina Gerber, who plays with Karla sometimes. I couldn't quit yakking with her about her experiences playing with such a great songwriter.
As I mentioned, half the fun for me right now is the process of discovery. I would welcome your comments after the next time you have your axe set up.
