I think he played a style of guitar made famous by Chet Atkins, it's called Merle Travis style. (I heard John McEuen say that once)  |

MJ makes me think of Michael Johnstone as well. He plays guitar and steel and is a great picker. I think the word (did) seperates it to the deceased guy.

The reason I wondered if he played an instrument,keep hearing every day what a GREAT musician he was. [Just my opinion] But I think Sinatra was the GREATEST entertainer of the 20th century,but never saw him play an instrument[maybe he could,don't know] label someone a great entertainer is fine,but if they don't play an instrument,don't call them a musician. DYK?BC.

I'm curious as to where you've been hearin this statement as I have yet to hear anyone state that. I've heard many refer to him as a great entertainer, which he undoubtedly was, but a great musician? never heard that one. |

Andy,you must not watch much TV, I've heard several talking heads,saying he was a GREAT musician,why I got to thinking,what instruments did he play, DYK?BC.

An interesting question.
I spent a little time on Google to see if I could find a definitive answer for you.
There’s actually a fair amount of debate about it.
Some people claim because it’s written in black and white on album credits, it must be true.
Those that argue say it’s very possible he was given credit for playing, but in reality might not have played one note. I wasn’t able to find anyone who actually had any pictures or proof of him playing an instrument, whether in the studio or as a hobby. Some people say that when kids all the Jackson boys played an instrument or 2, but no proof was given.
The album that many refer to as the proof he plays instruments is Invincible from 2001, where he is credited as:
Writer
Singer
Producer
Orchestra arranged and conducted by Michael Jackson & Jeremy Lubbock
All instruments played by Michael Jackson & Rodney Jerkins
Keyboard programmer
Drum programmer
Etc.
