Hey all, looking for the lap tuning that Ed Van Cleaf used. My 93 year old Uncle Vern doesn't recall

| the only ed van clief I know of used to come to the Winchester Conventions and I believe he passed away quite a few yrs ago. Ed played C6 and had alot of Byrd in him. He was a good one. cc |

Indeed Ed Van Cleaf's primary tuning was C6th, but he did play in various tunings.
I believe that Ed had perfect pitch. He could hear Jerry Byrds recording and play it exactly like him without notes or tablature.
Once I heard him playing and he made the steel sound like a cello. He was a very unique player.

I'll have to see if I can confiscate some of my uncle's old footage from the numerous conventions he attended. If so, I'll be able to decipher the tuning as I've know there is some close-ups of Ed playing.

Ed Van Clief, Vern Cornwall, Vern Eide...all names so familiar to me ! Ed was a SUPER talent ... sadly he passed away at the prime of his life. I backed him many times on r/guitar at the Winchester Conventions and was totally awed at his great talent. One of his favorite jam tunes was "TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME" (originally composed as a waltz, but not when Ed played it!) Man, it really swung !!
Vern Cornwall was really known as a fine rhythm guitarist. One year, he invited me to stay at his home prior to the convention. I noticed an old bakelite Ric and asked him to play it....gads, what an unknown secret Vern is ! He plays beautiful steel but prefers to play rhythm guitar. Another fine talent.  |

Ed Van Cleaf was a handsome clean-cut dude full of life. It came as a shock to learn of his sudden passing. I recall a session in his room at the Overpass when he was showing me a pile of his tricks...so many, I couldn't absorb them at the time....drats !  |
