Question Needed, your input on the most reliable 11th ga. string available for steel.
I'm coming out of retirement to do a show and my biggest fear is breaking the 11 when I'm on stage. I play a Zum D-10. Suggestions?

Use a 12 for the 3rd string.
I have done that for a number of years.
I don't experience much string breakage and I get a much fuller, richer tone with a 12. Very Happy

Buy Jag Wire Strings and also get the 11.5 for your third String. I have never broken a third string any more.I gave a freind of mine a 11.5 Jag Wire String for his Fessy and he said it has been on his Steel for almost a year. The only reason he chaged it was it was losing a little sound.BOB that runs the Forum sells them.

I agree that Jagwires definitely seem to last longer. I also agree the 0.012 or 0.0115 give a little thicker tone that balances better with the other strings.

Jagwires .0115 is the best for me in my sets and they last and sound great a long time. Jack

Put a new, whatever brand .011 gauge that you steel is adjusted for on your Zum the day before the gig and go have fun.
Unless there is something wrong with your steel, it probably won't break.

Cobra Coil strings from Bobbe Seymour.
I have done 14 gigs with the same set.
Jagwires are also very good.

Smile A big thank you to you all for your advice. Looks like I'll be trying out the jagwires first. I've never used the 12 ga. before other than the shotgun but I'm game for trying that out as well.

Most often related to diameter of bridge/changer roller, and, that diameter is a trade-off between tone and action.

- Smaller diameter means higher bending angle when pedal is activated, which stresses the string more so it breaks quicker. Smaller diameter prevents string-buzz on the bridge, gives purer tone.
- Larger diameter means smaller bending angle, less stress, and less breakage. Larger diameter also means higher tendency for the string to buzz on the bridge.

David I have asked myself the same question over the years that I have been playing. My mentor told me the same thing when I broke a third string that first time.

You know, it's funny, but I buy Ernie Ball strings by the gauge.
Plain stings, 6 to the pack, for $3.79 and I never have a problem with breaking strings.
No problem with the tone, either.

Just lucky, I guess. Rolling Eyes
