I turned my laptop on the other day and for some reason the CD-Rom drive didn't load correctly and doesn't show up in My Computer. It has a yellow exclamation point in the device manager. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and the untits. It says that the driver loaded successfully, but the device can not be found. So, I figured it died. (I do know that where I was plugged in, the power did show brown outs later in the day, so it might have been at that time, too.)
So anyway, I borrowed an external DVD burner from a friend that I have used before, (the lap couldn't burn DVD's.) It lap won't recognize that drive either. As with the CD drive, it shows up in the device manager also with the exclamation point.
Any idea what could be the cause? And how to remedy the problem? Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately this is going to be hard to troubleshoot without more detailed info. Which is not your fault, that info may not even be available.
One thing I would try first is to use the DVD drive in a different USB port than you usually use, assuming you have two or more USB ports. Depending on how the device was manufactured it can force Windows to treat it as a never-before-seen device and install the necessary drivers.
Other things to try are System Restore, with the goal of getting things the way they were when the external drive worked, or downloading any drivers you can find for it.
There are also options in Device Manager for rolling back specific drivers to a previous state, or removing the device altogether (which may aid in getting it cleanly installed later on). |

You could try plugging something else into the USB port, like an external hard drive, to see if the port is bad. Unusual that the CD-ROM and the USB port would go out at the same time, but that might indicate a larger problem. _________________ C#

Thanks, for the replies!
John;
I've tried the DVD burner in several USB ports, (there's three,) with no difference. I tried rolling back, but it said for these devices there was no restore points set. I've been moving stuff off the lap to an external drive to see about a system restore. I've not done anything to the lap before and want to have my bases covered.
Cal;
The USB ports are okay. I plugged an external hard drive into each of them and they worked fine.
I appreciate the input. Any more ideas would be appreciated, as well. _________________ My best,

Ernie,
My Cousin had the same problem with her laptop, don't remember what it was, something in the registry I think. Same as you describe on yours. I talked to her about it but she didn't know what the person did to fix it, no parts, just knowing what to reactivate. I looked at it, tried ext drives, both ext drive and internal drive had the yellow (I'm not working) triangle next to them on the list....Maybe Wiz or someone will know.

Ye call and I answer!
Try this. With the affected laptop or PC running in an Administrator level account, go to Start > My Computer and right-click on it. From the flyout options menu select Properties (with the left button).
- From the Properties sheet, click on the Hardware tab.
- On the Hardware page click on the Devices or Device Manager button.
- When the Device Manager opens expand the DVD/CD-Rom section, by clicking on the + sign.
- On the General tab, under Usage, choose Uninstall or Remove this device.
- Click Apply.
- The CD drive will be removed from Device Manager
- Immediately go to Start > Shutdown and restart the laptop.
- When Windows desktop loads you will see a balloon notice that Windows has detected new hardware and is installing it for you, etc.
- Unless the core motherboard drivers are corrupt, the CD drive should appear again in My Computer and be usable.

Wiz, on the same topic. Would that reset the drivers on a cd drive as well? My CD drawer seems to have taken on a life of it's own. When i press eject to put a cd on it, it opens, then snaps closed. I hit eject again, it might stay open, then i place a cd partially on it, and it snaps close wedging the cd between the drawer and computer?? Also when i go to remove a cd it happens, although it does play the cd ok. Is my drive all done? Ever come across this before? |

Okay, so after the manufacturer basically told me because my serial number wasn't in their system they couldn't help me, (unless I called their help line and paid to get help,) I made it my mission to find a solution or to know why not.
After like my 6th or 7th search for different things, I stumbled onto a similar problem posted on an old message board. It had links to several different places, but one of them was a link to Microsoft Support.
After a little digging, it was as you said, Bill, a single line in the registry that caused the problem. Something to do with upper and lower filters. (Which I had never heard of before.) Something apparently updated, (Windows is my guess,) and the computer had conflicting ways to read the drive, so it didn't at all. The support site gave information on how to manually fix it or to download a MS support program to do it for me, which I did. (I don't want to go putzing around in the registry!) After I ran the FixIt and restarted, it works fine now. The CD-Rom and the external DVD burner both work.
Thank you all for your idedas of what to try and check. Even though they turned out not to be the problem, (except you and your cousin, Bill,) I appreciate that you all are here to jump in to help. Thanks!
So, case closed. _________________ My best,

Cass;
The random snapping shut of the CD drawer means bad news for that drive. See if you can get a replacement from a nearby store. ATR Computers in Flint has lots of CD, DVD and CDR drives for laptops, as they sell refurbished Dell and HP business laptops. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
