I started to put this in the humor section, but it's too sad for that. It should probably be in the Extended Family or Gone Home, as it relates to the health, and possibly death, of country music.
I was on a plane trip yesterday and my seat mate, a woman about my age (50), said that she really liked country music, always had. However, she had never heard of Jack Green, Ray Price, The Wilburn Brothers, Connie Smith, Mel Street, etc... When I mentioned Porter Wagoner, she had heard of him......and get this.......................................................................................she thought he was Dolly's father.
I quickly changed the subject, and didn't dare ask what country artist she liked. I knew her answer would probably make me go for the vomit bag.

I get the same thing when I start talking about some of my favorite county bands, like "The Skillet Lickers", "The Possum Hunters", or "The Fruit Jar Drinkers". So I can name every picker that played in those groups and what songs they recorded & what tunings the banjo player used, but I have no idea who one single member of "Rascal Flats" is.
I guess it's all relative, but I would never expect anyone who says they like "County Music" to know everything from Eck Robertson to Lady Antebellum.

| i agree.....i see rascal flatts accepting awards on tv everyday...i couldn't name one of the members or one of their songs! it surprises me that the fat 'old' blonde lead singer is accepted as 'cool'. |

She didn't indicate that she came from a single parent family when she was "going"???? up. That would have been too personal to discuss. Gotcha! |

I meant parents.
I like some of the stuff I grew up listening to with my parents. It's what you grow up with. And then I was rebellious and liked that rock stuff, hippie music! |

I think I'm a closet hippie, but by the time I was ready to come out, I'd lost too much hair. Maybe I could shave it off and do the Kojak thing. If you remember him, it dates our ages for sure. I too grew us listening to country, and the rock deal of Three Dog Night, Rod Stewart, CCR, Eagles, etc....I even played CCR's Bullfrog song at a talent contest. I won, but I was the only one that entered in my age group. I also sang Okie From Muskogee in another contest. I forgot the last verse. See, I've been talent challenged for most of my life. |

| Me and two friends of mine met a black lady at an airport two years ago. As we talked a little, we told her that we just had been at a steel guitar festival. Then she asked what kind of instrument it is. We told her she must have heard it in country songs before. She replied that her name is Loretta, because her father was a big fan of Loretta Lynn. |

She likes todays country music, not yesterdays.So looks like we are losing ground in the fight over new and old country. So what if she didn't know who Jack Green is, she would name you todays singers.

Joe, You're absolutely right. The old sounds are losing ground fast. You won't hear it on free radio anymore. You'll have to pay satellite radio or buy CD's. I really enjoy the new country artist, Justin Trevino, Amber Digby, Bobby Flores, etc... doing the older, and "sounds like older, but new" songs. I guess that's okay, I don't mind paying for what I want to hear. I actually like to hear a lot of different styles of music, but new country just don't appeal to my ears. You'd never know that if you heard me playing a gig, because I have to play all the new stuff too. That's just the way it is.
Yes, if someone will record a song about me vommiting, and it makes a big hit. I can bottle up the vomit and sell it on the Internet. You can be my licensed distributor in NY. We'll make big $$$$ |
