Last night was a first for me. At almost 63, I actually got paid to play the steel, and some background vocals.
It was the annual Huggins Hospital Street Fair--a giant yard sale/carnival/lobster and steak cookout that draws thousands. Our group--The new England Country Boys--does mostly freebies around the area, and I've with them only a couple of months. (only band I ever played with) As our name suggests, we do COUNTRY!!! from Hank to Vince Gill to some fairly recent stuff as long as it's actually country music.
The crowd loved it all and stayed with us in the music tent right up 'till 10 when they started turning out the lights. Some folks said they could've listened to us all night!
I feel like a kid who just made the team!

Well done Ray. I remember the first time I got paid to play the steel. I was 23 and I thought I was quite old to be making my debut on an instrument! Now I have a few more miles on the clock I realise how stupid that attitude was. You are never too old. Here's wishing you many more rewarding gigs.

As Red Rhodes was fond of saying.... "Don't give up your day job, Ever, since you are only two weeks (in a union band) from being unemployed. Whoa!
