Carole and I just learned that the building is undergoing renovations, and might not be ready in time.

At this point it's uncertain whether the concert will go on as scheduled, but at a different location, or whether we will reschedule it at the same location at a fiture point when the renovations are complete.

However, it WILL be videotaped. I will make the tapes available if I am not too embarrassed by them.

Cool Mike! Wish I could make it. If my gig gets canceled (which has been happening a lot lately) I'll try to come up there. Try to record it.

Hi Mike,

Oh, how I would love to hear you play with that constellation of musicians. Too bad it's a little too far away from where I live. Maybe if I could get my university to send me to a computer conference in CA around that time ...

Btw: I really like your CDs! Magnificent arrangements and execution.

Mike,
I really wish I could see this concert. Can you talk somebody into recording it on video and get a selection or two on youtube? California is a LONG way from New York.
My dad, an all around musician, played viola in the Catskill symphony orchestra, and quite often played string quartets in our living room for fun when I was a kid. But he also played in square dance bands (guitar, fiddle, accordian) and prom/wedding bands (Piano, trumpet, sax, trombone.
Good luck, hope you have a great audience and the music goes well!

Tommy, I am not the first or only steel player to play classical music. Check out Buddy Emmons’s rendering of Pachalble’s “Canon in D Major” on his white album, or B.J. Cole’s version of Debussy’s “Clair du Lune” (which I also play) and 3 other pieces on his "Transparent Music” CD.

Marshall Hall recorded an LP of this music back in the 70s entitle Classical Steel guitar. That album is long since out of print, but it contains an etude by Chopin that is in my opinion one of the loveliest steel guitar recordings I’ve ever heard.

Lloyd Green performed a piece by Mozart at the convention a few years ago, and 2 years ago at the [phoenix show our fellow forumite Doug “Earnest Bovine” Livingstone played a piece by Bach, and received a standing ovation for it.

And of course, I’ve recorded 3 CDs. There is about an hour’s worth of music on my web site you can listen to.

Classical music is foreign to many of us. It doesn’t reflect our culture and isn’t part of our heritage. But it contains a lot of great music that works really well on the steel guitar.

I recommend that you listen to the recordings of Buddy and B.J. (And that of Marshall Hall if you can find it) that I mentioned earlier, and also go to the library and check out some CDs of the music by some classical composers. And try to imagine the music played on a steel guitar instead of the orchestral instruments it was originally written for. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much of it fits.

Mike you're a musical genuis. I do have the Buddy Emmons white album that has "Canaan's in D najor". I just never listened to the that particular cut. For years I have been somewhat narrow minded in my music, but now I find I am trying to branch out a little.
Thank you again friend,
Tommy
