I'd just like to thank the person/forumite that put up the youtube videos of Gary Hogue and Junior Knight. I can not believe I have missed seeing or hearing these players, but I was out of steel from 92 till about 05. Junior is killer, but Hogue is monster. A master of his craft, if the vids say anything. Would like to know his story and more about his playing.

Don Curtis told me that Gary suffered a fatal heart attack while mowing the lawn.

I remember the day... it was Mother's Day, May 14, 2000.

Gary was in Nashville cleaning his lawn chairs, and suffered his heart attack.

The bizarre thing is that his father died the same day, either a few hours earlier or later. Neither knew the other had passed on.

I can only imagine what Gary's mom must feel each time that now-dubious "holiday" comes around.

When I got the bad news very early the next morning, I called Jr. Knight at 6am and he was really shook up. Charlie Norris was like a father to Gary and he couldn't even talk. Texas steel players have a strong bond and community amongst ourselves and losses like Gary hit us hard.

Thanks guys for the information on Gary. I never heard him play until the videos came out on SGF. Wish I had, had the chance to know him. Another great man and steel player that has left a path for many of us to study and follow. Thanks again.

How truly fortunate you that knew him, are. I feel fortunate for the beautiful music he has left all of us to enjoy. If you haven't, you need to experiance these two great players and how they feed off of and support one anothers playing.

How four notes played at 1:08 in this context. Wow!

Yes Gary was a great guy and a monster player. Charlie, Jr., and Gary came down to New Braunfels in the mid 80s to help us get a PSG club started (I think my wife wanted to "adopt" Gary,,,LOL). When I heard the news of his passing, I couldn't believe it,,,,then his Dad with 2 hours of it!!!! BTW,,,is that Steve Palousek playing guitar in the video? He's another monster player that we were fortunate in getting to see "come up",,,,

Years ago I got a call from Bobby Garrett and he said : "Jody I have created a monster". He will put us old timers out of business. He was speaking of Gary Hogue who was taking steel guitar lessons from Bobby. Bobby indeed created one of the monster players of our time. Gary was a phenominal player and one of the nicest people on the planet. We here in Texas will never forget Gary. Jody.

And Junior Knight is still wowing us here in Texas with the Jody Nix Band. I don't know how he stands up to all the traveling he has to do, but we are sure glad he does. He's, in the words of one of our favorite TSGA MC's, "My favorite steel player"

Smile Hi, Dick ...
Thank you for your kind words about the videos. Very Happy

My name is Jim Lindsey and I've been away from steel since around Feb 2000 until now. I know just how it feels to be out of the picture for a long time.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine, Daniel, and another steel player, Danny Dees, introduced me to YouTube. Danny, the steel player, encouraged me to upload some of the videos from bands I'd been in since I haven't played in so long.

But, during my introduction to YouTube, the first thing I did was start looking for any and everything on Gary Hogue and Junior Knight. I did find one video of Junior playing a beautiful rendition of "Amazing Grace", but my heart sank when I could find nothing on Gary.

(Back in late 1984 I went with Gary to Charlie Norris' Family Music where he would be teaming up with Junior as the featured players that day and I rented a video camera to "capture the moment".)

When I saw there was nothing on YouTube for Gary, I completely forgot about uploading anymore videos of my old bands. Instead, I had a great time digging out that old video of Gary & Junior, converting it, and I couldn't wait to upload it to share with everyone.

I didn't know how many people might see those videos, but I'm very happy that so many people are seeing Gary and Junior play through them.

I've got more videos of Gary playing, and Junior as well, and as I am able to find them (in a huge volume of video tapes I have at home), I'll be happy to upload them and share them. Smile

I for one have enjoyed the videos of Gary Hogue and Jr. Knight. The picking was great and even Jr. Knight joking was fun to watch. Most people know, not only were these two men great pickers, they were best friends. I visited for a moment at the Texas show with Jr. Knight and he reminded me of his friendship with Gary and how he missed him so much. The videos Jim posted are sure appreciated from this corner and hope to see more. Thanks Jim.

Hey, there, Danny! Wow, seems a geological age since I last saw or heard you play. Good to see you on here, too, and thanks for your kind words ... you're way too kind!

Will definitely drop you a line ... lots of years to catch up on. Very Happy

Wow! Hey, Steve! Man, I haven't seen you since Moses was knee high to a grasshopper ... how have you been?

I really appreciate the kind words, too. I've really missed playing steel and the steel guitar community.

Not too much here at my end ... long story short, I retired from playing music to try to save a failing marriage, but it didn't work. Happily divorced now and more than ready to get back into some steel playing. Very Happy

Absolutely will drop you a line very soon and we can catch up on some old times. Smile
