I just took a blind shot and bout a guitar sight unseen. It was described to me as a Pierce (sp.?) 8 string pedal steel in maple with marqeutry inlay and a large white pickup. I am interested to see what the pig in the poke I bought looks like. Any ideas?

It has been described as sounding very Bigsby-ish but feels kinda stiff mechanically. I kinda assumed that all those early PSG's were like that. I got it stupid cheap or I'd have passed. |

Keith, I think I saw the one you bought at a musician's swap meet here in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't set up, but from what I could tell, it looked a lot like the pics Rick posted. I snapped some pics with my cellphone, but they turned out blurry. I couldn't find the owner, stepped out to talk to a friend and when I returned, he'd packed up everything and split.
It had a pull/release changer, undercarriage looked a lot like a Sho-Bud Maverick. 8 string, 3 pedals, no KL, if I remember right.
Good luck with it. _________________ Randal Smith alias Smitty the Kid

Boy, that picture brings back some memories! My first steel was a Pierce. It had a Fender 8-string pick-up mounted at an angle to accomodate the closer string spacing. The pedal set-up was real gimpy, so I just put a C6 tuning on it and played without pedals until I got the Sho-Bud that I had on order.

Got it. It is exactly like the one in the photo above but is missing a pedal. I hope to find another but am not expecting to. It needs a bit of lovin', as it was sitting around for a bit- a bit= about 20 years. Never lubed, cleaned or adjusted in any way. For the moment it is gonna be a console, until I can get together with a real steeler to help me get it right. I put E9 on it but I think that is going to become E7 if I can set up the changes properly. I really love the tone, very much like an early Bud with a very deep low end and a great vintage Leon McAuliffe kind of top end. It overdrives beautifully. I am stoked, at the price it is just a great new toy.

Being mostly a lap steeler, I suppose I won't mind if the changer is too clunky for bends. It sounds great as a console, if I can acclimate to the string spacing. |

That looks really cool, Keith. It would make a nice console, even if the changer doesn't work. If you can't get used to the string spacing, maybe try using picks.
Did it come with any pedal rods? Looks like the pedal spacing is pretty wide...I like that.
Would you mind posting a photo of the undercarriage? |

yeah the rods are there. I've had other requests for the undercarriage, I'll get those posted later. |

Wow. Those are some fairly massive castings. I'd add a knee lever and set it up to do most anything you'd need an eight string to do. You wouldn't need that many parts. |
