I attended a Blue Rodeo concert last night and i was super impressed by the steel in the concert.I,d seen them prior with Kim Deschamps on steel but i,m not sure who the present steeler is.Man does the steel just put the icing on the cake.He played accoustic when not needed but that was just a few tunes.I had a friend ask me what kind of keyboard that was lol _________________ music is the spice of life |

Hey John,
That fella is Bob Egan.
Great steel player and a great teacher, too.
He's played with Wilco in the past, but has been with BR for I think 9 years. Has three solo records, I think.
All the very best,

Kim Deschamps is one of my favorite steel players. Kind of an under the radar guy, I suppose. I love his tasteful lead lines and phrasing. _________________ "...An admission of interest in protracted commentary is certainly no reason to capitalize on surmised aberations that do not exist." - BH |

Glad Blue Rodeo is using a steel player now. I brought them on stage nearer the beginning of their career at the old Ontario Place amphitheatre (the old rotating stage) and they weren't using one then...but that was 25 years ago.
They're one of my favourite bands. _________________ Sho Bud Super Pro D10 |

Kim was with BR from 1992 to 2000.
Bob has been the man since 2000.
(The band started around 1985.)
Kim and I are from the same town.
He's since moved to Austin, playing in the Charlie Robison Band among others. He plays without picks.
"Blue Rodeo" has a tremendous catalog of songs, covering many varied styles, but all uniquely them. They are to be inducted into Canada's Walk Of Fame later this year.
I play in a BR Tribute band and have dissected both Kim and Bob's solos and fills, as we play the songs as accurately as possible. It's interesting to cover both of these players, as they are very different.
Both Bob and Kim are members of this forum, but rarely post. |

I know both Kim and Bob, but have gotten to know Bob well since I met him in 2000. I will see him Thursday night when BR play here in St. John's. I've done a few openers for BR and know them all well, since about '89. Awesome crowd. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Five Days in May, to me, would be in a Top 100 Country Albums chart. Great album. _________________ Sho Bud Super Pro D10 |

Hard for me to categorize it as 'country', but in any event, it's a great album and that's Kim Deschamps playing on this one. I think his steel work is just astounding on that album. _________________ "...An admission of interest in protracted commentary is certainly no reason to capitalize on surmised aberations that do not exist." - BH |

Yes, KIm has incredible tone on that album. "Hasn't Hit Me Yet" features a solo by Kim that I turn up every time it comes on the radio. I believe he was using an MCI SD10 at the time, through a Nashville 400, with a ting of delay.
Here is the video of "Hasn't Hit Me Yet". The solo is at 3:08:

Ha! I have never heard it on US radio! But I've heard it a zillion times in my truck. Thanks for posting that. _________________ "...An admission of interest in protracted commentary is certainly no reason to capitalize on surmised aberations that do not exist." - BH |

It was a big hit here in Canada, back in '93. I must have sang it a thousand times since its release. A crowd favourite all across the country. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars
