I need to replace the battery. It's 3.6V, 600mah. Can I put one with a higher mah like 700 or 800? I thought it would last longer between charges.

Depends on the phone and how much physical space you have for the batteries. Many will only accept the battery made for the Phone.

As Jack said, your first concern is the size (it needs to be nearly identical). Next, you must use a battery of the same type. NiCads and NMH (nickel-metal hydride), the two most popular, are not interchangeable, as the charging requirements are different. lastly, keep in mind that a larger (capacity) battery will take longer to charge.

yes size is so important. I took the battery out of my phone and took it to WalMart for replacement. I carefully checked the connection (which was sticking out of the box) and saw that it was the same. It never occurred to me to check the size. Guess what?
When I got it home it was too big for my phone.
