OK, so I've got to jump in here and say, that Joe did one hell of a great job.
So he ran on Vince in a place or two. So what! It wasn't as if he could play it over. Remember? It was LIVE!
Come on folks, wouldn't it be better to scrutinize your own playing, and ask yourselves if you could have done a better job than Joe "definitely" did?
I'll be the first to say I doubt very much anyone putting Joe down, could have done as good, let alone better.
I think most are comparing Joe's playing to what they've since heard, from John's playing. That's not even fair to do. We are each individuals, and as such, there isn't one of us who is alike in our playing ability/s.
Joe, was playing that song from his HEART, something that many don't do enough of. I also noticed that Vince was feeling that steel playing, from his heart too.
And yet instead of enjoying what was being played, instead of giving compliments, a few chose to put down Joe's playing, for what they themselves, just may not be able to pull off themselves, or even come close to playing.
Speaking only for myself, it would be a hard act to follow.
Maybe it's time we all start putting up videos, of Verified, one take, no gimmick playing. And all take a deeper look at our own playing before so willingly putting down others.
Sorry if I offend anyone, but it's simply not right to do.
Now I'll shut up and get slammed. But one thing for certain, I always tell it like I see it as being.
Apologies in advance, for anyone I may have offended, in speaking the truth.

Don: No need for any apologies !! I think you are spot on and as Russ also noted; the notes tell the truth of it. I think Vince heard what he wanted for his singing and his song. I don't think he heard a single over play and as was said: It was live; I'm sure he was familiar with the stage set up and obviously had no complaints about it. Look at his face and watch his hands. What else could anyone assume....

I wish I could overpick half as well as he does!  Besides, I watched the video to hear the steel more than I did Vince and Vince was totally happy with his overpicking!

A welcome diversion from the usual "I couldn't hear the steel enough" comments.
Why not just say he did a hell of a job, (which I think he did) and leave it at that. It's the kind of song that just begs for tasteful, crying, soulful, steel guitar playing. Without steel the song would fall off the cliff. I'm sure John Hughey would appreciated the playing on this, as I'm sure Joe appreciated what John did in the studio. Music is not about who's best. It's about being able to do what's handed to you, and make it work. Both guys earned their money in their own way. Most of us would be happy to do half as well.  |

Ok..I feel I need to apologize for my somewhat curt remark. Indeed my reply could have been read as cutting down an accomplished player. I could have worded my reply a bit more gently. My apologies to Joe.
Yes, Rick, I could have left it at "One hell of a job, Joe!", the usual nice and oh so polite, remark. Although that wouldn't have been constructive.
Don, of course I couldn't play even 10% as well as Joe. Still, I do feel I have the right to come with constructive criticism. The trouble was, my short remark was not very constructive so it turned out to be only critical. My bad.
To clarify, I will say that I did hear much of what our great teachers have warned us against: Don't overplay!, and I got stuck on that thought.
Who am I to know, maybe Vince had told Joe beforehand that he wanted to hear lots of steel. Judging by how impressed Vince was, maybe this is exactly what happened
Joe, again I apologize for my impolite remark.

Bent raised an interesting topic with his critique.
There are no absolute rules for backing a singer. Teachers have to stress things like don't overplay. They teach in absolute terms because they are trying to help beginning musicians break bad habits. Musicians who do not listen to anything but themselves when backing a singer or playing any type of song are guaranteed a short career path.
Teachers say listen to the singer, wait for his pause, when he pauses play something and then pause when the singer starts up again. There is alot more to backing stars than that. Joe is a seasoned pro and read the situation perfectly. He was most likely filling in for John. Most likely without a rehearsal. He was most likely told to turn it on and go for it. I thought Joe was brilliant. I have really only heard Joe play with Dolly in a very controlled setting. Vince is the type of musician who would encourage Joe to do his own thing. Its clear that Joe thinks quickly on his feet. Joe brought the goods to the party and Vince was visibly pleased.

Paul, thanks for those words of wisdom. I don't feel bad any more for saying what I said, I only feel set straight by a professional. I also feel a wee bit more educated on this huge learning curve which is pedal steel guitar.

Bent,
Don't sweat it. I for one saw your comments as constructive, and there's nothing wrong will calling it like you see it. It doesn't make it right or wrong, you're just making a personal observation. I've heard some of the famous pickers play things that I found hard to listen to, but again it's just my taste and opinion.
I guess I was defending Joe because I think the underlying issue by some people reading this thread is that he didn't do it the same way John did. |

yeah...it would have been hard for him to copy something that hadn't been created yet. it's always good to hear someone playing naturally and 'not' copying.
also shows how someone as special as john hughey can take a nice melody and create a magical masterpiece that will be a benchmark for eternity.
also nice to see other pickers have to endure the hot sacramento valley! ha ha |

Sorry, I sure didn't mean to say anything bad about the playing. As I said in my original post "this may be the best" and I meant it. I thuroughly enjoyed it!! Live, from the heart, and very early in the songs life make it even more impressive.

I have watched both of these on here ! I noticed that Vince was more impressed & more into it on the first vidio, there was more steel in it that seemed to please Vince ! The second vidio is good but the steel is not heard as much & Vince dosent seem as much into it !! I think both are good but the first is my choice !!
