Danny "Dirty Dan" McBride passed away in his sleep Thursday night following a lengthy battle with heart issues and diabetes. You may remember him as the singing guitar player from Sha-Na-Na who played at Woodstock and later had their own Televison show for several years where he also played the floundering newscaster "Kent Hardly Reed". Danny was a fine musician and played very strong rock & roll piano as well as guitar and also had a degree in journalism. He was a well known radio DJ,voice-over actor, songwriter and active columnist then blogger musing about all things musical. I played in a lot of bands with Danny over the past 30 years ago and he was one of my closest friends. He taught me a lot about music, life and what it takes to be a good daddy. A tremendous talent and intellect. Danny was about 63 years old. http://www.musesmuse.com/amusemyself.html

This was his last blog and ironically it was about the health care system and the way we treat our elderly and dying... http://www.laprogressive.com/2009/07/13/home-home-at-the-home/

Michael
I know what it's like to lose a great and talented friend... I've lost way too many this past year. My heart is with you. My best to Deborah as well.

Seeing this post is a sad surprise. Way back in mid-60's Boston, his then-band "Danny & the Cavaliers" and mine ("Luv Lace Lads") were among the house groups at the Rathskellar in Kenmore Square. I can't remember how many times any of us would show up on the other's night to sit in on songs and, while in the audience, heckle each other to our hearts' content: great times with a fine musician (and solid band), comic, and friend.
