I normally don't do in progress threads, but thought I'd share a couple quick pics of my latest project, FPS - 001

Body is some nice flame maple and the plates, bridge base, and fretboard are padouk.
Mother of pearl inlay, fret markers will be some super thin and low profile nickel silver fret wire. The two humbuckers will have 6 way rotary switching, lots of great tones to explore.

It still has a ways to go, but I'm excited the direction its headed.

Really nice wood. the design is great . Love the fry pan lower bout and the mini slope shoulder dread upper. I bet it will sound as beautiful as it looks. Very Happy

Thanks Dennis and Kevin Smile
The styling is a mix of several features that have always caught my eye and have been rattling around in my head for a while.
Its been great to let them out and see it take shape.

Cool--I like the styling. Looks to me like a cross between a vintage steel (probably because of the plates) and a squashed dobro (because of the slotted headstock and pronounced circle below the shoulders). 2 humbuckers w/6-way switching sounds like it'll be awesome.

Guess I've never seen padouk before--is it that red naturally?

Keep up the good work,
Vince

Thanks again all Smile

AJ ... no evil banjo here ... think frypan Wink

Vince ... yea, there is a lot of varied influences in there, the plates are somewhat reminiscent of a Ric Bakelight, definitely a frypan in there too.
The carving at the shoulders gives it a lot of definition and pulls the lines together.

Padouk is naturally that color, but will get a bit darker as it ages. When fresh cut and raw it has a orangish red brick color and a spicy cinnamon like smell.
Because it does not need a finish and has a waxy rosewood like feel under hand, you will see it used on some custom 6 strings as a neck wood. Tonally, it is much like maple.

Thanks Jim and Jim Smile

Jim .. definitely similar and here is the picture that got it all started in my head.

.
Then I did this concept drawing, originally I had thought of going solid on the top. Once we decided to go with a fancy maple, I went with plates so as to leave more of the maple visible.

You've got the touch Tom, especially for sanding those inside radius bits in curly maple, makes my fingers hurt looking at the photo Smile

Very, very swanky!

Thanks Mark Smile ... on the sanding, I use adhesive backed paper on an assortment of hard rubber blocks I've made to help with some of those troublesome areas.
Another handy sanding block for detailed areas is a good old big pink eraser.
