...An unknown error has occurred (-50)."

This annoying pop-up has been needling me the past several days.

What does it mean--5000 songs and podcasts lost to perdition? (Copy to 7 or 8 DVDs? Muck fe...) Is the library separate from the audio files themselves? Do I have to take this bloody thing to the Apple Store even though it's only across a fence from work?

G5 Dual 1.8 desktop; OS 10.5.7; iTunes 8.2.

The library is separate from the actual music. Maybe your hard drive is full. You should back up the music to an eternal hard drive before you do lose it.
This error may have something to do with Quicktime. I'd see if I had the latest iTunes update, and Quicktime, too.

Ben:

Take a look at the Apple forums for iTunes and you will see many complaints about all sorts of issues. It appears Apple itself is not particularly interested in resolving them. iTunes must not be a first priority at Apple.

I use iTunes 4.9 from 2005. My online security program complained about it as a security risk, so I tried version 8.2. It insisted that I take an interest in "Album Art" and "gapless playback", when I have no interest in either of those features. So I wanted to go back to version 4.9.

When I went back to 4.9, I got rid of Quicktime and instead installed the newest version of Quicktime Lite. My security program no longer complains about any risks. Version 4.9 works fine on Vista Service Pack 2, the most recent Microsoft OS. I have no idea how well it would work on an Apple OS.

You might prefer an earlier version of iTunes, depending on what you use the application for--less complexity, occupies less space, no nagging about gapless playback or album art, etc.

There is a choice in the configuration to in effect let iTunes manage your library. I have that turned off completely and control my library manually by deleting it and reloading the newest version with recent additions once a month--that takes 6 minutes for about 16,000 songs. Take Cal's advice and may sure that you have your entire collection of mp3s backed up to another drive of some kind.

I googled your error message and got 14 hits:

I didn't look through them, but you might find some useful info somewhere in them.

Ben, this is a syncing error, correct? Does it work if you turn off photo syncing?

I think a default setup for newer version of iTunes on a Mac put the music at:
/Users/<YourUserName>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/

As long as your files are all still there you're OK. But if you aren't willing to lose your data, then invest in a backup scheme. On a Mac the easiest thing by far is to buy a drive the same as your hard drive or larger and use it as a Time Machine drive. I think your G5 will have FireWire 800 so that will be the fastest kind of external drive for you.

Thanks for the help. here.

It occurred to me that it might have to do with my new >second< ipod (nano), which, instead of being for the gym, I plan to use exclusively for steel practice. (Job one: manually correct all the mislabeled Mel Bay/Anthology PSG download-mp3 titles.) Selecting and copying appropriate steel titles out of the main ITunes will be ongoing. (If the lost shuffle reappears--lost before packing for a ski trip--it will be for the gym, and probably will complicate things exponentially.)

I indulge all updates of software, unless it's something I don't use, like iCal, chat, Remote whoosis.

My main ipod has long been a 4th-Generation 40GB (no color, no video, no photos) and I don't plan to actively use these features on the nano.

G5 HD is huge and nowhere near capacity.

Unrelated except as pertains to software updates: the brand-new Safari often locks me out of being able to click on some button (particularly in Earthlink Webmail.) I have to quit and restart, if not just Safari, then maybe the computer itself.

You know if you hold down Option when you launch iTunes you can create another iTunes library, like for your nano. Apple just released an update for Safari that might fix your Earthlink problem.

Ben, I don't have the answer, but do have killer Mac tech guys who can handle any and all Mac problems very handily.

First try the 5 R's, it usually works for my iTunes/iPod problems:

The 5 R's works for all iPods, all models.
