Perhaps someone else has already discovered this..

I've just discovered a couple of very intriguing audio-clips on Youtube. These appear to be the original recordings of two of Connie Smith's classics--with Connie's vocals removed--for karaoke!

Check these out:
Karaoke - I'll Come Runnin'

Karaoke - If It Ain't Love Let's Leave It Alone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0qfh7RCyhY&feature=related

These are very instructive for learning how the great players record--without those darn vocalists singing over everything. (I'm just kidding--I love Connie Smith!)
You can clearly hear the steel guitar fills, pads, and solos..and when he lays out entirely. (If it isn't Weldon on these tracks, I'd be really amazed!)

There are probably many more of these. I'd imagine it's pretty easy for a recording company to strip out the vocals and make a karaoke version of a hit.

Dave,
I don't have any idea who the steel player is, but I'll bet the farm that it's not Weldon. Smile

Somebody step up and tell us who it is. Confused Confused

A friend has a album worth of backing tracks done by Russ Hicks . Russ plays all the parts and lacks only the fiddle. They are all western swing and texas shuffle numbers. The soon to be added vocals feature Basil "Bunnie" Cambell of Beckley who is a great singer as well as a fine steel player. He gave me a copy for my listening pleasure. It is that indeed! Don D.
