I'm sure there is already a thread to answer this....but my question is twofold:
1) What's the diff between an N400 and S400? Some folks recommend the S400 for double duty: Steel/Tele.
2) Has anybody heard that the Peavey Jazz Classic Series 400 is basically the same amp as an N400?
Thanks in advance! _________________ Sho-Bud Super Pro D10,Tele,Strat,Martin D-28,Korg Triton Pro,Nashville 400 |

Brian -- the Jazz Classic is almost identical to the Nashville 400, but perhaps a little more oriented to guitar... I use to have both and used the JC for both steel and guitar ...great all round amp.
I think the NV400 is a totally different more recent beast to the Session 400 ..both in size, power and technology! _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

Brian
I own both a NV 400 and a Session 400 and I strongly prefer the tone of the Session for steel. The Session produces a cleaner, sweeter tone. There are threads that have explained in detail the differences in the circuits, and I am not qualified to comment on those matters.
The NV can be modified to improve its tone, and everyone seems to rave about the improvements. Ken Fox and Brian Sarno seem to be the experts. There may be others. My NV has not been modded yet, so I can't compare a modded NV to a Session. Most people seem to say that the Session does not need any tone modification.
The Session has a larger cabinet that produces noticeably more bass response, which is really important if you are playing any C6th, but even on the E9th neck I strongly prefer the Session. (Don't be mislead into thinking I am a bass freak. I try to achieve a tone that is very bright and clear. I use lots of treble and presence and I dial out almost all the mid-range. Plus I play an Emmons Push-Pull with single coil pick-ups. It doesn't get much brighter than that. I hate muddy sounding steel guitars.)
It is my understanding that the tone mods to the NV cannot and do not improve its rather anemic bass response. Also, the Session is lighter than the NV.
If you are playing real loud the NV might be a better choice as it has more protection for the speaker.
Regarding guitar: I have played my strat through the Session with its 15" black widow, and I don't particularly like the tone. It has a mid-range quality that makes my strat sound cheap, and no amount of adjusting the dials produces a tone that I like. But if I connect the Session speaker output to my Randall closed back cabinet with 2 12 inch Celestion speakers, I love the tone. It sounds like an electric guitar should sound when a very clean tone is desired.
I actually haven't tried my strat throught the NV as I have been focusing on steel recently.
Hope this helps. Paul |

Brian,
FYI
Someone in the San Francisco Bay Area (Oakland to be exact) is selling a Peavey Jazz Chorus with a Black Widow speaker for $150. It was listed on the SF Bay Area Craig's List two days ago, and it's still listed as of a few minutes ago. It looks pretty clean in the picture. I haven't seen the amp and know nothing beyond what's in the ad. Also, I know nothing about this model Peavey.

Correction: It's a Jazz Classic 400, not a Jazz Chorus.

The main difference between the three models is the equalization. |
