Hello Chuck,

The Adirondacks... That's a little far north and a little remote in terms of population density. I am in Delaware County, south of Oneonta, East of Binghamton. I don't know of any clubs in my area, but there are some steel players - I know of three in Walton, and one in Treadwell. There are several in the Woodstock area as well.
You can go to www.onlinesteelers.com and click on New York State. A page will come up with all the New York State registered steel players and their locations. See if you can find anybody close to you where you could get together and jam.
You are welcome to come down to my music store some day for a jam if you like. Let me know what day you are coming, and I'll set some time aside to talk steel and play. One of the other players in town is retired, and can stop in almost anytime.
Have you been to the show in Norwalk, Conn.? It happens every year in November and gives you an opportunity to see some pro players and hear steel guitar all day long. There are also vendors there with CDs, learning materials, etc. For details on this show, go to the Pedal Steel Guitar Association Website. There is a link at the top of this page, under organizations.
Hope this helps some...

I have had the pleasure of doing a couple of the same shows as John de Maile and this guy could play in any state with the best of them...New York has many great players one that immediatly comes to mind is Chris "Tiny" Olsen who is probably hauling in a big Walleyed Pike just about now... Wink

Hi Chuck,
You may want to see if you can get a hold of Randy Rollman. I believe he is in Corinth which isn't all that far from Lake George.
I used to camp in Warrensburg about 5 years ago and found Randy. He owned a music store and told me about a Jam session they used to hold every Friday night at the Glad Rags Saloon. He's a heck of a nice guy and one great steel player. He may be able to help you out with clubs in the area and other things that may be going on as well.

Hi Chuck,

Randy Rollman is one the most talented steel players around. He owns "The Legend" Music store in Corinth, NY and he plays 3 to 6 nights a week at the "Ridin' High" Dude Ranch just off Exit 24 of the Northway (just one exit from you). For Wednesday nights he has just hired Larry Edwards to work with him at the "Ridin High" ranch. Larry is Sonny Thompson and the Mavericks lead guitar player, and is also one of the finest pedal steel players around.

Band starts at 9pm. No cover or minimun.

I think you guys have two great steelers in your area. Jody Carver, for one, and Arturo, is another and he plays a knocked-out one-owner, BIGSBY triple 8, with no dings whatsoever.

You should look them up............

Thanks for the response guys. I know Randy Rollman very well he is responsible for getting me on my way.
Indeed one of the finest players out there. Randy once told me, "Im glad your doing this, someone has to take my place" Im not sure what his shoe size is but I know it would take a lot to ever fill them.LOL
Randy and I can be found at the Ridin Hy Ranch in Warrensburg every friday and saturday night. If anyone is ever in the area, treat yourself to hearing one of the best in the business. "and I don't mean me". Thanks all. Chuck

Hi Guys:
Just happened to see this post and thought I'd say hello. I don't get on the computer all that much these days... rather I try to get outdoors as much as I can and Joe was real close, I was catching Smallmouth Bass !! Therefore I'm sometimes late in viewing current topics.

There are quite a few great players and guys in NY State and while I'm not from here originally I do call NY (specifically The Mohawk Valley) home.

Hope all of you are well.

Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" O.

Tiny, I just knew you would be out there fishing and what a great place to do it:lol: My neighbor and I have been fishing the Hernando"flats this week for Tarpon..So far no keepers just a couple of good eating black tip Sharks. Embarassed .I must say one of my best expiriences was being asked by Randy Rollman to sing a set with him at one of Bill Hankeys bashes..A truly great player..I seem to recall a Larry Bevins being on the same show...While I spent some 20 years in New England and did some shows with Jim Smith in New York for Dekley,I was very impressed at all the NY steelers that showed for those...

Very Happy Whoa! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Hi there, fellow pickers; am a retired post master/steel player from St. Lawrence county; the biggest county in N.Y. State. Haven't played actively in several years, but still love to attempt to do some pickin' on my sho-Bro Hound dog guitar; actually I played at a friend's funeral this A, M., here in an ASG Church in Edwards, N.Y. Along side two old buddies whom played with my deceased buddy. One of the most lively and best services I have ever attended. Standing room only..A.Men.. Do I still qualify as an active picker; I do own a 2007 Zum steel, which I am trying to play once again; if my fingers will allow me to [ with the good Lord's help ] I live only a few miles away from John Deboalt, a fine picker, in his own right.. You must hear him play the resonator guitar; one of the finest I've heard here in N.Y. State. We are both looking for someone to jam with. If you are interested E- Mail us, O.K? Bernie Gonyea
