That brings back some memories. It was Clem's clinics that enabled me to witness firsthand the wizardry of Jeff Newman and Buddy Emmons. Clem gave me advice on technique and added pedal rod extensions to my MSA.
He had a photo on his cash register of a fellow playing pedal steel even though he had lost his right arm. His left had held the bar, a thumbpick and fingerpick. Clem captioned it, "Now tell me your troubles." |

I visited Clem's shop in 1982 on my first visit to the States. We stayed 6 weeks in Sioux Falls South Dakota, but my friend Duane Apland met me and my wife at Minneapolis airport and we stayed a few days in Minneapolis with his son and daughter inlaw and went to visit Clem's shop. Great selection of steels in there. I remember getting a steel guitarist belt buckle and a great T shirt called "Steel guitarist" with caricatures on it...one was Buddy in his "Derby hat" I remember a steel guitarist I met in there...think his name was John Paul Jones...played like Hal Rugg. Clem stuck a picture of me up on the wall too...I had an "afro" in those days

Well, back in my salad days the Emporium was a wonderland and whenever I went in there either Russ Pahl or Mike Cass (who gave lessons) were hanging around. What is really amazing is about a mile east on Lake St. was Suneson's Music, another steel guitar merchant. I could go on and on...one time Clem had me sit down and got my right hand in the best Newman position and took a Polaroid of it so I could take it home and make sure I had it in the right place. Never took, oh well. He also came out to a couple of my gigs when I was first starting, met my parents...dems was the days..

Never met Clam, but I bought my Black Emmons S12U 7x5 Push-Pull from PSE in Sept '82. I also have some of those PSE stickers floating around.
It came with the Jeff Newman S12U copedant shown in Jeffs "S12 Universal - Book 1" book (Emmons set up).
I called Emmons to order a steel, and they said I had to order through a dealer, and he was the closest to Montana/Wyoming where I lived at the time. |

No, that's not Clem. Not absolutely certain, but I'm pretty sure that it would be a young(er) Mike Cass. Correct me if I'm wrong, Mike. And yes, Clem did indeed like Emmons push-pulls. Still does, as a matter of fact. And who can blame him? |

Jack....from what I remember on my 1st vist to the States was Clem did "NOT" have longish hair, and he wore specs. I really enjoyed visiting his shop....wall to wall steels If I'm not mistaken Mike Cass did a short while playing with the "ART ESSERY" band, with an amazing young lead player called "Stacy" ...I heard recently that Stacy passed away quite a few years ago with Cancer...such a loss.
I returned the following year and did a 6 month tour with another Minnisota band called the Dean Miller show. Good times  ...I still have that "Steel guitar Emporium" transfer here in England on a steel case. I was there in 1982.

Clem was the local Emmons dealer, which explains the abundance of that particular brand on site.
Yes, Stacy did pass away some years ago of cancer. Whatta shame! A great fellow and superb guitarist and singer.
Art Essery probably still lives outside of Nashville. At least he did in the late 90's.

Mike was I right about you playing with ART ESSERY ?? a friend of mine Duane Apland used to send me cassette tapes of your playing when y'all played the "Rainbow rooms" in Sioux Falls South Dakota. You're a really superb player

To answer your question, The Emporium folded up and Clem wound up in Nashville, still in the steel guitar business. |

Clem actually moved back to Minnesota a couple of years ago. He
does still work on steels when the opportunity arises. |

Sorry Mike! Thought that may have been you, but knew for sure it wasn't Clem.
Clem moved the Emporium from Minneapolis to the Nashville area around 1983/84. Clem is retired, and he and his wife returned to the Twin Cities area almost 3-1/2 years ago.
Happy to report that Clem is doing very well. And he is still quite involved with the steel guitar community.
p.s. Mike, I claim first dibs on that Fender 400 in excellent condition for $225.00. |
