I want to add a vertical lever to my guitar. I received the kit from Mike Mantey at Mullen, but the crossbar is too long for my guitar, so Im still waiting on that part. If this is over my head mechanically, I'll be looking for someone who can do this installation. Has anyone undertaken this mod themselves?

Kl kits are pretty straightforward on the Mullen. I have installed several of them. The crossrod comes apart for installation. It's just a matter of postioning everything, marking, drilling and bolting it on.
If the crossrod is physically too long to fit your guitar, be sure you described your guitar model correctly to Mike. An SD10 is the same body width as a double neck 10. A single or intermediate model would not be so wide.
Best advice is to call the folks at Mullen and describe any difficulties you are having. The installation shouldn't be any problem for anyone with basic mechanical skills. Good Luck. |

You have what is considered a narrow body S-10. You can simply cut the crossrod, the end opposite the machined bushing end. You want the cross rod to go into the back panel about 1/4- 3/8". The easiest way is to set the cross rod on top of the bottom of the guitar and place it correctly on the front end and mark it on the back end and cut. You can see on the back panel, where there is not a cross rod, how deep the holes are for the crossrods to go in. Hope this makes sense, about confused myself. |

Jerry,
Thanks for the encouragement. Im now positively sure my guitar is not an SD. Im a new player on the steel and this is my first adjustable pro level guitar (I have a Carter Starter too).
The Carter lowered 5 to Bb on RKL, and I am looking forward to adding it with string 10 to the Mullen.
About the crossrod, I have a Guitool and cant find the right hex size for the crossrod bolt. A call to Mike is due! |

Mike,
Thanks so much for the reply. I was just about to call you when I noticed the post.
Im working on this now. 2512 is the # stamped on the lower right corner inside the body. Any help on id'ing this guitars date? Heres a pic of my "mark" on the crossrod. Its more like 3/8 but Id rather fine tune it with a file than cut it too short.

Thanks to Mike Mantey at Mullen Guitars and the forum for help. I feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment after successfully adding another lever to an already great sounding steel guitar. Here's a pic of the finished job. You can close this thread b0b, I need to practice!

Clete - In the photo, is the new lever folded back for putting in the case? I hope so! If not, it looks like the stop is on the wrong side. |
